The flywheel forward goes way back to day one of the marine engine. The old engines had rather large diameter flywheels so, in an effort to get the engine mounted lower in the bilge, the flywheel went forward. Then, came the V8 era and they too where being mounted flywheel forward but putting all that power through the PTO end of the engine another problem popped up - cranks were snapping!!! So, the engines were flipped to flywheel aft. By then the flywheels had gotten to be smaller in diameter so it really wasn't a problem. The problem it did create is when flipped , it changes the rotation of the engine hence, the RR engine!! Almost all of the boat builders were stuck on starboard helms so the RR was needed. Plus, back then there was a very limited supply of LH props!!

Regarding the trans sharing the engine oil, that goes way back as well. They figured why was there a need for two oil sumps!! The Paragon was typical but yes, the gear case is the marinizers of the engine. "Joe's" came before the Paragon. They actually started around the turn of the century making stand along reverse gear sets. You would shorten your prop shaft and bolt it in!!

I'm really surprised you have spun that front main 3 times and I don't understand why overfilling the engine would help. That engine is not splash lubricated but rather pressure feed. You must have some oil passage issues/problems.

Just curious, what engine is in the 'skier?

That cable is no longer made. If you still have the old cable, you can drill and tap the brass part that connects to the peddle so that it will screw onto a standard cable.
