where is the emergency kill switch on the 5.8 gt40? I got it running on a flush kit and it won't turn off and I don't see water running out back

Your boat may or may not have one. The lanyard style kill switch is usually a red teather cord connected to a pop up switch located somewhere near the throttle.

got it turned off.....don't know what was going on but the engine wouldn't turn off even after pulling kill switch, turning off battery switch.........I was about to pull the fuel line but then my wife turned on and off the battery switch again and it killed it.
I think my keypad is starting to take a dump because it sounded like the starter was still engaged and the stop button was not picking up it's switch as I was pushing on it. Did that to me a couple times this summer but it sort of worked itself out.... I didn't notice any water coming out the exhaust when the hose was turned on. Knowing my luck and my dumba$$ tendencies to mess stuff up, I probably just fried my engine. It was truly a total freak out moment. No emoticon does my panic attack justice. Temp gauge didn't get above 170 though. |

I did the 5G bucket thing. Running hose in bucket, charged 10 ft hose to the Perko flush kit. I saw water in there

Not familiar with the Perko flush kit. Does it have a selector switch that enables/disables flow from the hose? Just a guess.

The Perko does not have a selector to direct the flow. It's simply a spring loaded check valve system. Lot's of problems with them!!! They usually break in two before you get a chance to use them a couple times. Trash it and use Tim's method.
Spencer, You mentioned the starter continuing to run. Check the continuity of your start relay. It may be welded together due to a low voltage problem. |

I don't think I had enough pressure using the bucket method because the check valve has to have pressure to open.....so it wasn't open, meaning not good running the engine without a water source.

Spencer, You mentioned pressure needed to open the check valve in the Perko. Remember a negative pressure from the RWP sucking will do the same thing. Yes, do check the condition of your impeller. |

Considering my screen name I shoulod probably stay out of this but I am trying to get a clearer picture, did you hook the flush system up to a hose in the bucket? I would think it would just draw air from the water intake because that is easier. I would either run a draw hose from the bucket directly off the raw water pump intake if you want to test the pump, or use a pressurised hose with the perko system to run the engine. I mostly use the second option.

You may get off with just a burned up impeller. That would probably have been worse if you had the motor get extremely hot, then suddenly have water get to it. You'd have cold water on a very hot engine and that could cause thermo-shock.
Always make sure the engine has "air" cooled itself back to normal before attempting to restart, once you have your water situation sorted out. |

The Perko Flush Pro is designed to take the hose directly, so no need for the bucket. Use one method or the other, not both.
Pete, I have a 1999 Flush pro that still works great. |
