I don't suppose a Mustang nylon is supposed to have a slight bend of 3-4 degrees in it about 10" from the bottom.

I didnt *think* so, but in looking at the diaries now, Im not so sure. My '71 Skiers have a bend in the pylon, but my sister's '68/69 does not. I thought that change was made for '71, but we all know how consistent CC was with some of those details! Based on your motorbox, I think your Stangs are both '70's.

If the pylon is just leaning at an angle and not actually bent, I'd have to say it's a tolerance issue between the hole in the floor and the fastening at the keel. We do know very well that there were times out in the CC factory that they had a hard time reading a tape measure!
 It went something like this: Hey Joe, what measurement did you get. Sam, it was 4 inches and 3 of those little marks on the tape.

It is hard to see in the photo. I thought it was possible that it was in there intentionally to prevent it from rotating when the skier is pulling hard outside. I also don't know if this one is correct for the boat.

I think his SS which I believe this pylon is from, is a '69. It's serial number is like 28 boats from my 12-68 one. Your sisters pylon was on the factory floor waiting to be put in when Harry, who was putting the motor in the boat next to it, accidently backed over it with the forklift.Money being tight at the time and Harry being Harry it was installed anyway

John on a different note does your SS console have aluminium trim on the bottom where it meets the floor? If so is it the same trim as on the inside edge of the gunnel? Thanks

The trim on the bottom of the Barracuda console is a length of upohstery cording.

I noticed some holes in the side of the console just above the trim on the bottom that may have been to attach it to the floor with an L channel. The floor of my boat has had some substandard fiberglass work done there and I have nothing to match it to. I will examine the console later today and report back on the findings. I believe mine is missing an insert tray that would have held items in the area under the lid.

Gary, have you replaced the floor in your Mustang? If you used plywood, is the floor higher than the original fiberglass floor? Will there be any fitting problems?

I was just looking at your diary. That is one beautiful looking boat you have there. The engine is quite unusual, I can't tell if it is a Ford or a Chrysler. It seems to drive the transmission from the front end. Maybe the shine on it is throwing me. |

John, thanks. It was our first project and came out pretty decent. My son restored the gel and it came out really nice. It was very flat and discolored, but there were very few spider cracks. The engine is a 170 ci Ford six and is flywheel forward. It has Dearbo transmission.

What a great, reliable engine, at least in a car. Back in the day I had a 62 falcon with its little brother, the 144, in it. It was very smooth and quiet, and it ran forever. Very lucky finding one without significant hull problems.

I hope to see your boats in person some day too Bruce. I have replaced the floor with plywood and yes theoretically it would be a problem.My console came out of a Barracuda,and since it's a deeper hulled boat,the console is deeper too.So it needs to be cut down anyway so I could compensate for the floor thickness.But I'm not going that route since I don't care for the plywood. Once again Steve W is bailing out another Mustang owner with his recycling program and understanding spouse. The major problem I have is matching my vinyl for the side panels and passenger seat,the color has been discontinued, but I'll figure something out. |
