Temp gauge on my 1997 SK runs between 120 & 140. Put in a new thermastat & no difference in temp. I am thinking that it maybe is the temp gauge that needs replacing? What are your thoughts?

I always promote testing before you just start throwing parts at it. An IR temp gauge reading at the sender would be a start. Then a resistance reading off the sender cold and hot. The sender is a 30 to 240 Ohm and the gauge range is very linear to the Ohm range.

Knowing your engine as well as what temp T stat you installed would help us.

GT40 EFI put in the 160 degree thermastat.

I sure wouldnt think so. I run a solid 150-160 on my carb'd 351w with a 143 stat. Theres nothing different about a GT40's cooling system, so a 160 stat should have it running between 160 and 180.

My bad. You are right. 160 is normal for my boat, too.

No idea what stat was in our 90 but that thing would never run above 145 per the gauge anyways...

Hi how did you get on with this problem?
I have an 01 210 with gt40 and I am having the same problem.
Temp gauge not going above 130. Used to read between 160 & 170.
Put new 160 thermostat in but still the same.
I have earthed the signal wire to the gauge and the gauge works fine.
How do I go about testing my sender?
With the gauge reading below normal my Risers appear to be a lot hotter than normal.
Could this be connected?
Does anyone have a cooling system diagram?

I have sorted it. It was the sender.
I removed it and it was all coked up and the end that the wire connects to was corroded.
I did a simple test to check its functionality. I earthed the thread to simulate it being screwed into the engine. Connected the signal end to the gauge then put it in some boiling water.
The gauge stopped at 130.

I then cleaned the entire sender with a wire brush and tried the test again. The gauge then went to 180 and stopped.

So still not working fully so have ordered a new one.

Maybe the original poster has the same issue.

I replaced the sender. Now I get the temp up to 160 but thats it. So made some improvement but still not quite right.

Have you Ohm'd out the sender wire. You could have some extra resistance. Connections especially the wiring harness plug at the engine can be a problem. I've seen them green (corrosion) inside.

Also, have you checked the voltage you are getting to the gauge? Could be the same problem!

BTW, I really don't feel the 160 is a bad temp.

Pete, I was going to say the same thing on the 160.

The boat should not be getting any higher that anyway.

An EFI Ford (like a GT40) should be running closer to 180 with the 160 stat installed, if Im not mistaken.

If its running a true 160, it wouldnt bother me too much, though.
