Hit an unknown submerged object at the lake this afternoon. I was riding at the time, with my buddy driving. He described it as a "big bang", never saw what we hit.
My brand new 542 has one bent blade (presumably where it hit the object), and another blade dinged where it hit the rudder (!!). The shaft actually pulled out of the coupling on the trans end! Shaft does not appear to be bent, spins freely.
I'm planning on sending the prop and shaft off to be checked out and repaired, and doing an alignment when they come back. Should I be worried about trans damage? Surprised that the shaft pulled out...maybe I have a coupling issue as well?
I'll post up some pics asap, just curious what you guys think about the shaft pulling out of the coupling. Any opinions?

I'd replace the strut bushing while the shafts out and would recommend looking at a dripless packing. There awesome.

Are you sure you hit something? Maybe the shaft just came loose from the coupling? There should be a saftey ring on the shaft that would stop the prop from getting to the rudder.

Yep I would second that. There was an incident at White Lake this spring where a shaft broke loose from the coupling and almost created a tragedy. If it had not been for dozens of people looking on as it occurred and their fast action it would have been bad. Think it was a 75 SN. You are lucky. Nobody was hurt and at the end of the season you won't miss much action.

I would like to hear what the experts have to say about this. Seems to be a relatively common problem.

I agree there's a good possibility the shaft and coupling were fretted due to misalignment. The coupling is a heat shrink to fit on the shaft. .000" to -.001" clearance. When was the last time you did an alignment? You will need at least a new coupling half and bore it to match the shaft.

even if you did hit an object, the shaft should not have pulled away from the coupling, i too would agree that the coupling is worn and simply worked its way out of the coupling. the bang you heard probably was the prop hitting the rudder, maybe time to invest in an A.R.E taper shaft, along with an alignment

You guys are right, upon further inspection (in the daylight) today I'm pretty sure we didn't hit anything, the shaft just came out of the coupling. The safety ring on the shaft looked like it rode on the stuffing box and then came loose. I'm thinking that the safety ring should have been adjusted so the shaft would come clear of the coupling but the prop still miss the rudder - not sure if there is enough play to allow that though.

The set screw in the shaft coupling was safety wired tight, but doesn't seem to have made a difference.

Anyway I am guilty of not checking the alignment since purchasing the boat this spring I've even watched Pete's alignment video but still couldn't find the time to do it...

I'm pretty interested in upgrading to the ARE shaft, looks like a nice piece of hardware. I R&R'ed the shaft coupling on my previous boat ('76 Tique) and it was not fun with the interference fit (put the coupling in the oven while my wife was away ) . My current coupling is definitely shot as I can slide the shaft in 1/2 way by hand. No obvious wear on the shaft though. Not sure I want to put the money into a new coupling, might rather spend it on a better shaft setup.

Any good sources for the ARE? Only place I can find online is Elberts, don't seem to see pricing listed there. How many boat tokens should I expect to spend for the upgrade?

@Keegan, what happened with the 75 Nautique? Shaft fell out and boat flooded? How is it possible to lose the shaft completely with the rudder in the way? Rudder broke off??

At White Lake, the boat was at high speed and when the shaft hit the rudder, the boat took a real hard and sharpe turn. It was so hard of a turn, it threw the driver out of the boat. Then he ended up under the boat.

The rudder stopped the shaft and prop from leaving the boat.

We were definitely lucky. I had just taken a fall wakeboarding at 24mph and my buddy said the "big bang" happened right as he throttled down to idle. Guessing the shaft pulled out as the boat deaccelerated.

We just assumed it was an object strike, as the debris was horrible all day. I think they just began drawing the lakes down for winter and flushed a lot of hurricane debris through from the lake above. We wouldn't even have gone out except the weather was fantastic and we were dying for one last ride this year! Not the ideal way to end the season...
