The Actual cause of the 35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis was the failure of a structural plate that had been spec'd undersize at the time of its design. This lead to a sudden and catastrophic failure. The bridge had been inspected annually and was under going a major deck resurfacing(repair) at the time of the collapse. It had nothing to due with funding, and the bridge was not due for replacement. Hats of to all that responded to the incident that day for minimizing the effects of the tradgedy. |

The main infrastructure problem is the siphoning off of money from roads to transit to subsidies the commute for a few at the cost of many.

In Minnesota we voted in a special transportation funding package, all the billboards supporting it had roads pictured on them when in fact only 41% was designated for highways, the rest went to light rail and bike paths. A year later they were looking for more road money again. |

So write a check already.... No one is stopping them.
Watching a program the other day and the person being interviewed was a rich lawyer that agreed that he and other rich should pay more. When asked if he paid extra in 2010 or 2011, he said that he would not pay until all were required to. What kind of answer is that ? I donate to Charities and do not ask others to just because I am. The Government is just a great big Charity. So Donate already.... |

We just lost the Chrysler engine plant in Kenosha last Friday. The plant once employed 14,000 people. They will be making the engines in Mexico now. The best part is that Chrysler transferred all its assets at the plant to a company (old carco) that was created to liquidate the assets of the plant. Now they are going to walk away from the plant leaving an environmental cleanup bill of more than $10,000,000 to the taxpayers. That's the way relaxing regulations creates jobs, government funded jobs to clean up the mess when they move their production to foreign countries for more profits.

It had nothing to due with funding, and the bridge was not due for replacement. Hats of to all that responded to the incident that day for minimizing the effects of the tradgedy.
Really, nothing to do with funding? The problems were well documented and the patches were not sufficient to prevent the collapse. Since 1993, the bridge was inspected annually by Mn/DOT, although no inspection report was completed in 2007, due to 0the construction work. In the years prior to the collapse, several reports cited problems with the bridge structure. In 1990, the federal government gave the I-35W bridge a rating of "structurally deficient," citing significant corrosion in its bearings. Approximately 75,000 other U.S. bridges had this classification in 2007. According to a 2001 study by the civil engineering department of the University of Minnesota, cracking had been previously discovered in the cross girders at the end of the approach spans. The main trusses connected to these cross girders and resistance to motion at the connection point bearings was leading to unanticipated out-of-plane distortion of the cross girders and subsequent stress cracking. The situation was addressed prior to the study by drilling the cracks to prevent further propagation and adding support struts to the cross girder to prevent further distortion. The report also noted a concern about lack of redundancy in the main truss system, which meant the bridge had a greater risk of collapse in the event of any single structural failure. |

The problems with the bridge were documented. I noticed here in Chicago bridge work began almost immediately after that one came down.

John, Like any old bridge there is always maintenance required , especially when you combine the temperature extremes of Minnesota and the use of ice melting chemicals, (the new bridge is pretty cool, it sprays itself with liquid melter when the temp goes below freezing) As you point out the bridge had been inspected and issues worked on. Even when they did the study for the deck replacement (not just a repave)they used the original engineering for the loads it could handle, you could have doubled the spending for maintenance and still know one would have gone back and checked the engineering of the truss plates, the original engineering was simply accepted to have been correct. (not anymore, all bridges in Minnesota got a second look after the incident, for which funding was not a problem) The bridge however was in need of replacement to add more lanes, but we were to busy building Jessie Venturas 3/4 billon dollar choo-choo from the mall of america to down-town to be adding lanes to the freeway system. |

ya know, my good friend who owns a machine shop refuses to do work for a company that supplies him with Chinese steel, Ive seen the rounds first hand, he tries to cut the steel and it constantly hits hard spots and skips or breaks his tooling, I really would be worried about the bridge steel after seeing that *************** the nips are trying to pass off as steel

their standards are not quite like ours, and it has been proven that the United States manufacture's the best steel in the world, I would bet the steel on that bridge is of the same qaulity of the stuff my friend tries to machine

Now that is an example of creating jobs...in China with tax dollars. This is cut and pasted from the article for anyone who didn't bother to read it.
California decided not to apply for federal funding for the project because the “Buy America” provisos would probably have required purchasing more expensive steel and fabrication from United States manufacturers. Despite the American union complaints, former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, strongly backed the project and even visited Zhenhua’s plant last September, praising “the workers that are building our Bay Bridge.” Zhenhua put 3,000 employees to work on the project: steel-cutters, welders, polishers and engineers. The company built the main bridge tower, which was shipped in mid-2009, and a total of 28 bridge decks — the massive triangular steel structures that will serve as the roadway platform. |

This is the part that I noticed..
"But California officials estimate that they will save at least $400 million by having so much of the work done in China." If you want to live in a Global Market, you have to be competitive. 5.56% savings is better than I get at the Bank. Or as I said earlier... shut and lock the doors.. Ross talked about "that Sucking Sound" that everyone laughed at. Not laughing now... |

I love our country enough not to sell it out for 5% savings. That's $7,600,000,000 on the project that this country will never get back. that money would have bought a lot of goods and services at home. In addition how much are unemployment benefits, food, and housing assistance, and all the other benefits that will be needed to sustain the 3,000 families that didn't get the jobs. Remember, when Americans profess that "freedom is not free" it doesn't just mean putting a bumper sticker flag on your foreign car. it also doesn't only mean that we can expend the lives of our young soldiers. Everyone must pay their share. What some do not understand is that we are fighting a war right now, an economic war, and we are losing. China has the perfect weapon, greed. American business and government is assisting by worshiping the almighty dollar. I would prefer that we don't sell our country out to a totalitarian communist regime aimed at world domination. It appears I stand with the minority on that issue.
How long before Nautiques are made in China? Do you want one if it is? Many of the high end yachts are being produced under contract there now, and they are getting into recreational boats right now. Feel good about yourself, do something good for the country... while we still have one. Oh, and that big savings costing 3,000 jobs. That is roughly $1 per California resident. It would be made up in short order from the tolls they intend to charge. |
