I have excessive carbon buildup on plug #1 and plug #8. all other plugs look terrific.

what does this imply? thanks

they are not firing correctly, check for loose or worn spark plug wires, bad dist cap.

Also check and make sure the firing order is correct. Fords are numbered 1-4 on the drivers side 5-8 on the passenger side.

thanks 79, i was counting on your input.

cap is old, it was recently off and put back on. plugs have less than ten hours on them. autolite platinum, i am little suspect of the of the quality of the plugs themselves.

regarding the wires, yes, after thinking about it a while before my posting, i was wondering the same thing.

i think i'll,

1. clean a carboned plug and put it in a known good cable location

2. put a suspect cable on a known good cap location

3. put a good cable in a suspect cap location

hopefully this will narrow it down

forget all of that just break down and buy a new set of 8mm wires and a new cap.

If you don't have a high output coil then the platnum plugs are realy a waiste of money and are not going to help anything. I just use the standard 24's and replace them every year.

...and its worth the extra cash to buy PCM wires so you get the PCM logo printed on each wire

Yeah, forget the kids, you need those $80 Accel wires. Number 1 and 5 should run the leanest because of the tilt.

If the carb is adjusted correctly and you don't have a valve issue or weak compression on the cylinder they will all be the same.

The tilt of the motor will not have any effect. Think what you want it's bullsh*t that the tilt of the enginie will effect the amount of gas vabor going to a cylinder. Having weak compression in a cylinder or a flat cam lobe, or carboned up valve will restrict the amount of vaccum to the cylinder. The tilt will not have any effect.

Why don't you drive 400 miles and take the exhaust manifolds off your boat and see which ports are the cleanest.

still waiting for you to explain how one cylinder gets leaned out over another regard less of it's location. I guess the front cylinders create less vaccum because they are tilted, or should I say they're higher than the others, they are all tilted at the same angle.

I don't know why, I've been told this by two mechanics. I'm going to pick up my motor Friday which has the 6 quart oil pan. I'll ask my cuz to explain it to me.

it's only 6 qt's if it's an aftermarket oil pan or it has been modified, because the stock pans are 5 qt. Well then again it's really old so they made them that way back then....NOT!!!!

No I don't I guess they made special pans for you that no other manufacturer used that where 6 qt pans.

I guess I'll have to look and find a Ford that as a 351w or 302 engine and a 6 qt Pan.

Tim,

i caught your 1,8 error, didnt think it was worth mentioning. regarding the oil pan, the manual is clear (see reference section) 302, 351 - 5 qts. 460's - 6 qts. not trying to call you out on this but i simply dont know where your getting your info - its certainly not from the pcm manual at least for my vintage of pcm 302.

Now, 79, you mentioned 8mm cables. my 302 currently has 7mm cables. DIM has the pretty 8mm ford blue ones for $45 and the PCM 7mm ones for around $30. Are the 8's worth the premium?

OK, in 1966 PCM didn't exist. The engine options CC offered then were Chrysler, Mercruiser, Interceptor, Revley, Gray Marine, O.M.C. and Universal. Here's a pic from the 1966 Brochure showing my motor, an Interceptor. Compare that oil pan to the Mercruiser oil pan.

Look at the 1967 Chrysler engine manual. Go to page 4, they hold 7 and 8 quarts. But according to 79, I don't know what I'm talking about. I've owned my boat for 16 years, I know what I'm talking about.

If you have a 312 , 292, etc (y block)... interceptor from 62 it holds...get this...the Dearborn shop manual says 6-8 quarts! Thats a quite range! It took closer to eight!
