Been using Marine Interstates for a few years now in my PCM 350, but they only last about three years despite being on a trickle charger all the time.
Is there a better battery out there, giving longer service life? Optima perhaps? (current battery is a Interstate SRM-24) thanks so much, RG |

RG,
Having them on the "trickle" charger all the time may be your problem. The typical trickle will not completely turn off so they will "cook" the battery. If you want to keep a battery hooked up all the time, you need a battery maintainer or a three stage charger that will turn off. Many here use and have very god luck with automotive batteries. BTW, why do you have it hooked up all the time? Welcome to CCfan. Post some pictures as we always like them. Get some submitted to Keith for the diaries section as well. |

If you do some research on the "optima" (the official keep up with the Jones' battery) you will find that they changed their manufacturing when the company changed hands a few years ago and they are not the quality product that they used to be.

I should have stated that I maintain with a Battery Tender, which turns off automatically.

RG, I googled the battery model you mentioned. It looks like it is a deep cycle.
For your application, you want a regular starting battery. It's been mentioned that Group 65N is correct for this boat. The starting battery is one instance where you actually want automotive. Many batteries labled "Marine" are deep cycle, and you don't want this. Check out this thread By the way, the Walmart version is pushing $100 now. If you go there, or elsewhere, bring your old one to turn in. There's a decent amount core return. |

Dont wast you money on a "optima" when they first come out they where great but now your better of with some cheap brand I have had good luck with NAPA batterys

so it sounds like any good Automotive battery that fits in the box, with a ton of CCA's should be fine.

RG, Don't go for the real big CCA's. I made the mistake years ago (1000 CCA's). With the big CCA's batteries, support of the plates is sacrificed to get larger plates in the case. 600 to 700 is a good size for starting our engines. |
