My 82 2001 drips about a teaspoon of oil when the boat is sitting a week. I have only had too add 1/4 a quart once since march & I boat every weekend. So it's a small leak coming from the top rear part of the oil pan. Were it butts up to that plate before the tranny .What do I need ? Is this a rear seal problem ? Should I even fix it ? I watch my motor very close & take very good care of her.All of my used cars leak small drops somewere , but I just always check the oil level .Thanks Dan

so then you added only 5 qts because if you added more than 5 that is why it is leaking because it is over full.

No , I added 4 qts and it was nearly full. Then just a bit more to almost get it to the full mark. I keep it just a little below the full line .Never all the way to the line & never over the full line. Never to the add line either . Thanks , Dan

Anymore ideas ? My dip stick could be funny , it's difficult to insert sometimes .Were do you keep your level ? Think I should keep it closes to the add mark instead of closer to full line ? I thought it was a seal ? Man , I hope it is something simple.

Wipe down the back of the oil pan nice and clean so there is no oil or visible shine from the oil. In a week when you think it should have dripped again you should be able to trace the oil where it is running from, chances are its only the oil pan gasket from sitting there with the oil against the back of the can since the motor is angled upward. You could also try lowering the trailer tongue to see if the change in angle will stop it.

My trailor is up all the way. I will lower it . Thats sounds like a good idea cause I got a new jack around when the leak started. Thanks , Dan

Look at the gasket to see if it looks crushed down alot and "squeezing" out of the edges or it it has visible cracks on the outer edge. If it is it will need replaced to stop the leak.
Sometimes after the motor sees some ours an oil pan bolt or two will bump loose slightly. If the gasket looks good check the tightness of the bolts on that end of the oil pan. Be careful though, only a few ft-lbs of torque on these or you will make the leak a lot worse. I would just put a socket on them with no ratchet and see if I can turn any by hand, if you can easily; then the bolt is too loose. |

If oil is leaking down the center of the starter line up plate it is most likely the rear seal leaking. If it is the rear seal, you will have some oil inside the bell housing also.

Tim , tell me how to look into bell housing . Is this bad . I thought it might be the rear seal. Is this something I can just keep an eye on and leave alone if it's just a few drops a week ?What is the bell housing & whats it do ? Thanks!

Check to see that it's not dripping from the drain plug.

Tim's got it .Just like he said , strait down the starter plate in the middle. Is this bad ? Will it hurt the bell housing ? Very small leak as of now . Is it safe to run until winter ?

Mine did that last summer. Try some stop leak, it will make the seal swell up and maybe stop the leak if it's not too bad. The only bad thing is you have to pull the motor to change the seal. The leak will not hurt the bell housing or anything inside which is the flywheel and the damper plate. If it's not very bad, make it a winter project to fix it.

I have the same issue. Are you sure it is the rear main seal ?
I have already changed it last winter (1 piece seal)on a 351 HO. It has 30 hours on it since this service. I recently have changed the oil pan gasket and it has fixed the leak along the starter plate. I'm not sure if the leak is coming between the bell housing and the starter plate. but still a teaspoon of oil when the boat is sitting for a week... when I look on it with my fingers behind the bell housing it has some oil. Any suggestions would be very apreciated !! thanks |

Teaspoon? Why even mess with it? Wipe it off once a week and use it.
There is no gasket between the starter plate and bell housing. Is it coming out of the breather and dripping down? |
