The manual for my 95 GT 40 does not say weather there is a tranny filter?? Also where is the drain? It says you are supposed to fill it back up at the lake while level on the water. This seems problematic, can someone walk me through the steps to do this for this motor. Can i wait till spring?

No filter and you suck the old fluid out. There are several threads on how to do it. Use the search feature and you'll find them.

It would be worth at least checking the trans fluid now. You don't list where you are from but if you have weather that gets cold enough to freeze and there should happen to be any water mixed in with the trans fluid, the expansion from freezing could cause damage. You'll know there is water in the fluid if it doesn't have the clear red color but rather looks like a strawberry shake.

If you want to do the change now, go ahead and replace the fluid using roughly the same amount that you pulled out. When spring rolls around and you have the boat back in the water, check the level on your first outing. Top off if needed.

So Nappa has a hand pump for 23$, what is the method for making certain you add back what you took out? Nothing came up in the several searches I did. Also my manual says Dexron or Dexron II, what is the preferred type??

Hmm! I just did a "quick" search not even going into the detail search and 46 threads came up!

The pump that most use, is one of the vacuum extractor type. It's the same one used to suck your oil if you do not use the drain hose out the bottom of the boat

Ryan,
I use the vacuum extractor on all the boats since I typically do it in a wet slip boat house. My Tique is the only boat that has the drain hose anyway. I tried it when I first got the boat and found it just as easy to use the extractor.

You should be able to get a suction gun like this for about $10....not sure if that's what you were looking at in NAPA.


Another type, with more uses (but with a higher price tag of about $50 more) is a vacuum pump like this.



Once you draw the fluid out, it is a simple matter of measuring....see how much goes back into old quart oil bottles or something like that.
In most cases you'll find Dexron III now which will "meet or exceed the requirements" of the older versions. Most everyone uses Dexron III.

if your anal, fill it to the top, as much oil as you can get in there for winter storage, fire it in the spring and suck it out, you can actually see the oil line in the Borg Warners from winter lay-up, cant in the pcm's because of the aluminum case. the case wil condensate and rust...plus the oil will keep the top half of the rubber seals pliable. i have no history if doing this affects longevity, but it sure does'nt hurt anything. plus it does make you change the oil everyspring on the transmission

For the method of putting the same amount back in that you take out:

1.)Acquire two identical, empty and clean, clear containers. I used two empty windshield washer fluid bottles.

2.) Put all of the old fluid you've extracted into one of them.

3.) Put the container with old fluid next to your empty one on a level table.

4.) Use new tranny fluid to fill your empty one to the same level as the one containing the old fluid.

5.) Get a suitable (long and skinny) funnel and pour your new fluid into the tranny.

Hmmmm that's a new one. I never heard Eric mention this before. I musta missed it somewhere. Makes since to me as we do the same with the fuel tanks to keep moisture down. Greg is this a normal winterization method you use for 'the pumpkin patch' even though our boats aren't down as quite as long as our northern bretheren'?

Hello,

I use a Turkey Baster that I picked up at a Flee Market for $3.00. You can go to Walmart / Target (etc.) and get a plastic Turkey Baster to draw the fluid out of the trans. My trans holds a little under one quart.

And yes, Dex III fits this description.

Do NOT use synthetic. Avoid high mileage formulations as well.

I have read on some earlier post that when changing fluid to the Dex/Mercon fluids to do 2 or 3 fluid changes to be sure that your are flushing all the old fluid out. This is on my list of things to do in the spring. Should I be running the boat much between these fluid changes or just a quick lap warm it up?

lets put it this way, the warmer the oil the quicker it comes out, and it suspends contamination also, if you are switching from 20w or have water in there, its a pretty good idea to flush it 3 times, shifting in and out of gear to clear or bleed the clutch packs. and then check the alignment

So I got a suction type pump and put it in the dip stick opening and after about 50x I gave up as nothing came out but air. I did make sure the container was lower to help too It is roughly the same size as the hole - a little smaller and goes in only about 3",...what am i missing?

Don you need to get the tubing right to the bottom of the case otherwise it will just suck air. Try and use a rigid tube some have used copper but I used a poly type rigid hydraulic hose.

The pump I used had one hose of much smaller diameter than the other. The smaller one was the one I used. I had to poke around a bit to find the bottom.

Thanks fells! Actually the pump came with a smaller hose that fits in the bigger it should work.

I had this shed built a year a go for wood storage, the right side worked perfectly for the boat I never thought I would have room to own! this is where is will stay for the winter. It has an excellent cover and it is under the roof to the windshield.

no luck with the crappy pump i got from auto zone. I got the smaller hose deep but pulled next to nothing out. I need to find a better pump. bri892001 where dd you get yours??

I got mine at a local West Marine. They're pricey but tend to have everything.

I grapped that photo off of the NautiqueParts.com website. They have it as well and probably beat West Marine on initial price before shipping.

Don, I use the long, skinny hand pump off a tall bottle of hair shampoo. The tube is skinny enough to get down into the fill hole of the tranny. I just pump it out into a jar and measure it to make sure I got it all out. Cheap and works well.
