I asked for a project and thats what I got! Here is my 1980 Ski Nautique that I recently purchased from another CCF member.
I pulled the engine Monday and started to take the boat apart. It appeaers that somewhere along the line someone attempted to repair the floor, I found expandable foam (from home depot) and drywall screws used. This is my first restore, so maybe that is common, but I would guess that it is probably not. The rotted stringers and foam are totally soaked. I have been glued to the stringer forums the past few days trying to put together a game plan, lots of great useful info but any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the blurry pics. |

Brian do some reading off the search button on restring lots of great info, and strip out the hull floor and foam to dry out the hull.
Once you have decided which way is best for You, then rebuild....keep the pictures coming good for others and thanks for saving another CC |

Yes it definately will. I think it will be a good first restore for me...I have some experience with wooden boat restore but not fiberglass, I will probably have a ton of questions...Im located in West Springfield, my boats are kept at my house in Holland in the summer though.

So Ive been glued to the stringer forums for the past 4 days....It shows that there are lots of different levels of experience and also ways of doing so. I have read of stingers build out of 2 by 10's from home depot, and another builder was inquiring on using composit decking also from home depot another builder was using Divinycell H-80 5/8" (5 pound density). so here is my question, i understand that there are better materials then others but what is the general all around best material to work with, i just dont want to screw it up....please bare with me this is my first time im nervous, lol

I strongly agree. Keep it simple for this first time and go with wood. Try to find the Doug Fir. If not, the LVL is a good alternate. There's a member who used it and a thread on it. |

good to know I was actually just pricing everything out. Stupid question, but when you say composite, do you mean 1X6 decking material you can get from home depot or is this special stock built spec for boat stringers?

My wife has restricted me to working on the boat for only a few hours a day but I think I made good progress. Got all the soaked foam out, I think this boat must have sunk, either that or was never covered....ever.

Great pics! Glad to see you save another CC as well. I would have to agree with the others, Tim and Keegains stringer rebuild where step by step. Good Luck

Brian, Sorry I missed this question. NO NO on the "composite" decking you find at one of the home centers. It's made up from old recycled milk bottle type plastic that are HDPE (high-density polyethylene) and ground up wood flour. The HDPE is what's used on containers of glue - why? because the glue will not stick to it! So, I'm sure you get the idea of why you do not what to use it! Keep up the good work on getting that hull back to "bare bones"! |

Well im glad to clear that up, before i started taking my deck apart,haha...I didnt think so but I figured i'd ask...So far I have been advised to use Douglas fir or LVL...are these the only acceptable types of lumbar? I ask because I have a large ammount of unused cedar i would like to do somthing with, any thoughts?

I simply use photobucket and never have a problem. It will automatically (a setting in your account) resize any download. It also has a nice edit program. Using it also will not use up your allowed space in your file manager. Since you have posted plenty of pictures, you may want to take a look to see how much you have used.
BTW, I just spotted the non OSHA approved extension cord you have. No metal boxes on the end of rubber cords. It's a potential shock hazard. Better get it away from all that water! |
