have 206 year 2007 PCM 330, done 600 hrs, i am constantly (EVERY WEEK) topping up with oil seems my engine burning too much oil. i have no visible leaks and no visisble smoke from exhaust and engine runs fine, TEMP IS 160-175 , oil pressure 40 at idle up to 80 at 4000 rpm plugs are not coated in carbon they seem fine, anybody else experienced this, is my engine worn maybe?

BIT OF HISTORY
12 Months ago I had to change my manifiolds since i had water in oil, but since then engine run fine

a compression test will help, do a comp test then squirt the cylinders with oil and try again, if it goes up then it might be getting past the rings, also with worn rings you will notice more than normal blow-by.
interestingly in my car i was burning a qt a month, I switched to Rotella and havtn burned any since????

My Dads 2000 Lincoln would go thru almost 1 quart in 600 miles when approx 1-2 years old. Ford could never figure it out and finally said that was normal. Turned out to be the pcv valve. Maybe something was overlooked when yours was apart.

im using quicksilver (which i think is mercruiser brand) 4 cyl , 25 w/40
we are in v high temps most of year middle east.

I replaced PCV Valve 6 months ago and the original was not blocked either.

eric i will do as you say, what should the comp test typical values be? and do you reckon worn rings is going to be a big prob or do i just keep on adding oil

Where is the oil level on the dipstick?

Dumb question but some people think the oil is supposed to be at the top of the dipstick tube.

its a salty and manifolds gasket corroded and leaked water into oil.

I am quite mech minded and do all my own maint, i keep oil level mid way betweem the Fill mark and max mark on dipstick. after a ski the level is at the Fill mark?

but i did wonder am i getting a correct reading from this stick

in the world of boats, most never even lift the lid, so if your a worry wart and the readings are low, do you justify pulling the motor down or simply just add oil?
thats pretty good oil your using, pricey, but try the Rotella and see what happens.
the stick is there just to make sure there is oil in the engine, I really dont think the low or high mark will fail an engine, its when you pull the stick and there is nothing on it and the it alerts you that its time to put some oil in.
I kept getting a 6 litre box truck at my shop, sure as *************** i would pull the stick and have to add between 3 to 4 qts every time in a 5 qt system, wonders of the world I guess, still running btw,

Mine (2008 EX343) was burning 2 qts / 50 hr service interval. Turned out to be some bad rings. I thought my stick might have been inaccurate, but I tracked oil level by noting where it was when filled to spec (4.75 quarts I IIRC--turns out it was dead-on with the "full" mark), seeing where that put the oil on the stick, and then tracking how much oil it took to bring me back to that mark every 25 hours.

If performance is good / adequate, I don't know that there is any real benefit to rebuild based on bad rings...you can just put it off until you feel it's necessary and keep adding oil in the mean time. Maybe it'll get worse over time...maybe not.

How did you determine it is the rings? did you perform a compresion test?

what boat. what prop on ir? how's it used? how many hours on the engine? what oil? any old code from temperature stored?

210 SuperAir used for wakeboarding typically with 1800lbs of ballast. Compression check came back normal...all but one cylinder were within a couple of pounds of each other...one was out by 10 lbs. No code thrown, no temperature problems, engine was broken in properly and maintained with oil changes every 50 hours. PCM tore down the engine under warranty and said it had a problem with the rings. I don't know the exact nature of the problem but assume it was oil control since the compression check came back looking good. 330 hours on the engine when it was pulled...I started noticing oil consumption early on, but don't remember the exact hours. BTW, PCM has been spectacular in stepping up to the plate and addressing the oil consumption instead of telling me it's normal.

Oh...forgot: prop...Acme 1279. Oil: varied based on some suggestions from PCM, but typically Chevron Delo LE400
