I am trying to decide what transmission I should buy and have installed in my 89 Fish Nautique. I am also looking for a recommendation on who may be the best to install it. The PCM transmission that was in the boat has been removed, it's rusted pretty bad but works fine. I'm not putting it back in my boat but if anyone is interested in it I' m sure we can work something out. The boat has a 351 Windsor and is reverse rotation, I have just bought a replacement ring gear and I am about ready to have a transmission installed. What do you recommend?

I'm sure our trans expert Eric will be on in the morning to comment. Jodi of Florida Inboards I'm sure will have some great advice as well. He's actually doing a Fish now. Be patient! How much do you want to spend will probably be their first question. |

was it the 1.23 in there? if so i would probably stick with that one because you wont have to change alot,
first things first, what ratio? seeing its reverse rotation also tells me that it may be a 1:1 in there spinning a right hand prop....aluminum doesnt rust????? couplings are easily changeable....tell us more |

No but it does corrode and commonly called "white rust". Being in Florida and a Fish, I'm sure it's salt water boat. |

The one I took out was a PCM 1.23. I was told that CC used this tran in the 89 and that when is goes you replace it, it's not worth repairing. I asked for help removing the old tran and you guys told me talk to Woody who was very helpful. I will take pics of the old If needed. The part that rusted is the end of the tran where the shaft and coupling are it looks like cast iron. I had to cut the bolts off because the previous owner left it in the saltwater and the bilge pump was faulty. The shaft is good and can be reused I've been shopping transmissions and would like to install one that can be repaired if needed. Velvet drive seems to be popular but I have no experience so I only know what I've heard. I'm on a budget so what do I need to spend to buy a new trans $2000 the installation I have no idea. I'm sure the bell housing can be reused, the mounts need to be replaced. I will take some pics tonight when I get home and load them for your viewing pleasure. I would like to keep it between 3 to 4000 if possible. I have a guy who has an 88 fish that needs engine work, he wants to sell it pretty cheap 3000. I will have pics of that this weekend. Thank guys.

anyways if you go to a Borg warner you will have to do a few things, you'll need a different prop, rear mounts The PCM 1.23, switchs rotation of output because of an extra gear in the backend and is also a down angle keeping your engine parallel to the stringers. the Borg Warner will require you to angle the engine and spin a different prop because input rotation is the same as the output |

Wouldnt a 1.5:1 be a better choice if swapping brands?

Seems like keeping with a new PCM 1.23:1 would be the easiest choice.
Also, if you wanted to change your effective "gear ratio" you could always replace your prop down the road. |

really, about a month ago, there was a zf 63a on E-bay, it was a 1.12:1
down angle, spins either direction for forward...on a fish you could even down the road install a trolling valve. Ill post the guts of a 630v and you will see the qaulity and durabilty, that would be the perfect transmission for das boot |

keep in mind, the picture is a v-drive...the Bently of transmissions, btw, the one i saw on evil pay was going for 400 bucks, i have yet to buy a good ruuning take out and have to completely rebuild it, seals and gaskets. very high qaulity, and you can use a rightie or a leftie prop
btw, mastercraft uses these transmissions exclusively so its nothing new to ski-boats |

Hi, I am in Panama City. If you are near We will be more than happy to help you with your instillation.
As for your choice of transmission I would stick with what came out. If your 89 Fish had a 123 then you should probably stick with the 123. Changing to a 71 or 72 C or PCM 1:1 will require quite a bit of changing of components such as prop shaft, prop, motor mounts not to mention that if indeed you do have a 123 transmission you have a left hand motor. The 123 is a 9* down angle transmission. I have both new and a good rebuild-able 123 core transmissions. Good luck with your fish. |

I relly like the idea of putting a V-drive in but it seems like it will be alot of work. Changing the motor mounts and the angle of the motor along with prop and shaft etc... This may end up exceeding my budget. I guess i need to get a quote so i can decide. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

Eric is not talking about converting to a V drive,he is showing the quality of that brands internal parts.The picture he happens to have is a V drive
