I am restoring a 74 skier 16' with a 302 Ford. I am changing all the fluids and am trying to decide if I should go with ATF or 20W in the tranny. The 20 W will give it quieter operation and has better lubricating qualities but the ATF is what is recommended(we use 20W in outboard lower units). The ATF is not operating as a power transfer fluid and does not have the same lubricating qualities.
WHY ATF in the first palce .... and comments or words of wisdom! |

The ATF is basicaly a 20 weight and is easier to find. There's nothing wrong with using it and would be my first choice. All it's doing is providing hydraulic pressure to the clutch packs. Yes, it does lubricate as well but mostly in reverse when you are spinning the planetary gear set.

Comparing a marine trans to a O/B or I/O lower unit is really a pour comparison. Totally diferent gearing plus, the HP going though the lower unit gears which are always on the small side is very demanding. A lower unit is a gear engineers nightmare! |
