Is it worth it to drop the rudder port out of the boat to drill and tap a grease port?
It looks like a lot of room it the pics but I don't have a drill that can line up with it perpendicular because of the v of the hull on the sides, the transom on the back and the bracket for the bilge pump on the front. So is it worth it to take it completely off to do it, or is greasing the rudder a bunch of hype? (I have seen some of the newer boats with a grease port). If I do it, I will put a hose up and over the muffler to make it easy to grease. |

I believe the greased ports also have an o-ring to keep the grease from working its way out... or at least slow it down. I would not bother adding a zerk to a port that didnt have one.

I put one on mine a few years ago. I think it has prolonged the life of my steering cable. When I grease it, I can turn it with one finger.

I it isn't broken (hard to turn) then I would just leave it alone. If you need to disassemble it for repacking anyway, then I would coat it with a waterproof grease.

Boy, a little bit of grease made that thing turn like a dream. I hope it lasts a while.
