Should there be any movement in the cable left over slack when it goes in and out of gear, Also seems to be firing in and out of gear, Does the wire go to the ignition or starter on the solenoid? Still has water in the tranny have drained like three times Do the coolers go bad?
Mike Seems to be bangin into reverse. 1 to 1 velvet |

Mike,
There's always some slack but how much do you have? What did and how did you adjust the shift and throttle cables? "Firing" in and out of gear? Please explain. What wire? The wire from the NSS (neutral safety switch)? The NSS only cuts power to the starter relay so you can't start it in gear. It has nothing to do with the ignition system. Do you have a wiring diagram? Yes cooler go bad. Did you ever pressure test it? "Banging" into reverse - once again, how did you adjust the cable? Does the engine RPM go up before it shifts? |

Pete,
Are you coming to FL? If so is there a certain flavor of beer I should bring? I will try to answer in order, I noticed the firing in gear yesterday? I had the float set to high and was trying to get back on the trailer. Anyway I gave it some juice to get it to fire of course I am standing at this point cruising dead in the water towards the trailer, bang it fires and almost throws me over the windsheild. Anyway fixed the float and all seems well. The slack is about 1/2 inch maybe a little less, as far as adjusting cables tried to put back where they were, pretty clueless on the process. Yes the NSS is what I was reffering to not sure if I hooked the one wire up wrong I thought it went to the starter on the solenoid. Engine does not seem to be gaining in rpms when shifted but I will have to double check that, No I have not pressure checked the cooler . How would one go about that. The big ends or the screw on fittings. Thanks a ton Mike |

Mike,
One of these years I'll make it to the SJRR but it;s not in the cards this year. Don't worry as you will have plenty of help down there. Sounds like you sure need to adjust the shift and throttle cables. The NSS must not be hooked up correctly since it sounds like you able to start it in gear. The oils side of the cooler is easier to pressurize since it has the threaded fittings. You use regulated air at no more than about 30 PSI. Stick the cooler in a bucket of water and look for air bubbles. Make sure you double wrench (use 2 wrenches) on those fittings. The cooler is a thin piece of copper all soldered together and the fittings to the shell are easy to damage. |

cool Pete
Is there a simple way or a good reference to follow on adjusting cables? On the NSS I tried the wires both ways on the switch same results either way. Boat ran great. The only wire left is the wire at the solenoid, Unless there is somthing else.??? Wish you could make it Mike |

Thanks fine. The color doesn't matter. Tim's diagram is just for a later model boat. |

alright,
My one white wire is hooked up to the S position on solenoid. The other one is in the wiring harness, I will check the actual key switch tomorrow. Mike Found good link for tranny adjust, still searching for throttle, it seems pretty much the same just adjust so it balances out with out pressure one way or the other. Maybe a little pressure to the closed side on throttle? Mike |

I will also look and make sure I have the main power going the right way, I don't see any other problems uless a bad connect at main switch or somthing wired wrong up there. You know how to tell when you are getting old dont' you?

Still starting in gear, new solenoid, new wiring harness, everything else seems to be working fine, can the nss be bad and the boat still start?

What is the volt/Ohm meter telling you about the NSS? It should be open when in gear. Have you adjusted the cables yet? That should be done first to make sure it's not an adjustment problem. |

it is open all the time, Does it have like a spring loaded ball or some kind of contact in it? If so I think it is stuck. Cables dialed in, smooth.
Thanks Mike If I take it apart is anything going to come shooting out. |

Mike, If it's open all the time in forward, neutral and reverse then it's quite possible the NSS is bad. Pull it and activate it manually while Ohming it. What concerns me more is since it's open, you should not be able to crank the engine no matter where the trans shift lever is. You have something really screwed up with the wiring. Go back at it with the wiring diagram in hand. Did you say you put a new wiring harness on the boat. If so, was this purchased or home made? |

maybe not open but the switch is flowing voltage. Harness is store bought, colors matched and double checked , the switch is stuck, the shift lever was stuck when I first started messing with it, it freed up and seems to pull good, when I get that switch ouut I will know more.
Thanks |

If it's "flowing voltage", then the switch isn't "open". Think about about a light switch. Closed - light on. Open - light off. |

have not the nss , instead took it for a test run, Ran nice, Still cranks in gear but at least it cranks, Seems super smooth going into forward, but reverse is engaging very quickly. cable seems adjusted Maybe I need to make the cable a little longer not sure if that will change it. Went all day without getting the inside wet, Parked at my cousins it started raining hard and to top it off some nasty little tree dropped about a million green buds in my boat, not the kind u smoke.

Well back at it, pulled the nss and cleaned ball is not stuck reinstalled same problem boat still turning over, going to rechase wiring at solenoid may have wire misplaced. or wrong. Any tips for the circulation pump? removed in the process of cleaning. pump came with a real cheesey gasket so going to purchase a new one before installing.

Easy Pete,
I still have to guess where to set the dial and most of the time not sure what the reading means anyway. But hey With all of your guys help I have managed to tear the thing all the way apart, and more importantly put it back together, so it has taken a year and a half, Then swapped motors again. And still needs work it has been worth it Mike |
