Hello,
I have a 1990 Ski Nautique. The gas gauge sticks at empty. Every once in a while it will work, but very rarely. I'm thinking that this likely means the issue is in the gas tank, vs the gauge. Any thoughts on how to test, how to repair, or if it's even worth it to fix? Thank you! |

Well, the best way to test the sender to the gauge is to actually remove the sender from the tank but that can be a real PITA! But, the bottom line is you will need to get to the sender so, plan on pulling the tank. you had better have a multi meter handy to check the Ohms on the sender. Do you have one? Fill us in when you get the tank pulled. Welcome to CCfan. We always need pictures! 
NG, This is not "magic", you need a multimeter if you expect to do your own work. Do you have the knowledge base? If not, maybe one of your friends know how to read the volt/ohm meter? Please, if you do not have one, go out and buy one $20 get's you a basic meter!!!!!! |

How are your other gauges? Is your gas gauge the only one giving you trouble?

I had the same problem with my '80 Nautique. I pulled the sending unit in the tank and found that the rheostat was corroded. Put a new unit in and... viola. Fixed.
On the '80 it was very easy to pull the sending unit. Just take the screws out and lift it out of the tank. I didn't have to remove the tank. Make sure you disconnect the battery to avoid any sparking.

I would check the ground wire on top of the sender before removing the tank. Could be a looose ground.

Other gauges are fine. I will check to see if any wires are loose behind it. Thanks for the responses!
