I have an 89 BFN w/454 that I have owned since it was new. I've been running the 14 x 14 props that came with the boat when I bought it. Are the new Acme props really so much better? I've heard they are like bolting on extra horsepower out of the hole.

Yup, they make a world of difference.
If youve got the common 330hp 454, then the Acme 1598 (13x14, .080 cup) is a great choice for all around use. |

2nd Tim's comment. Throwing on a new prop is like throwing a new motor in the boat. I couldn't believe the difference when upgrading to ACME from our stock federal on our 90 ski nautique after 15 years.

Yes, a new Acme will wake the boat up more than you would ever think. Any yes, the 1598 is a great match with the stock BBC 330HP engine. We have that setup in our BBC 85 SN. |

Craig, did you ever get any performance numbers (WOT speed vs. RPM) with the 1598 on your '85? I cant remember.
We ran the 1598 on our BFN last year for the few weeks it was in the water. Im guessing it will still be our go-to prop, but we're also going to try the 1868 (12.5x14.25 4-blade) and the 1458 (same 13x14 3-blade as the 1598 but with .135 cup). We've also got the 470, 654 and 1442 to try in case we want to keep the revs down... but I doubt those will come out of the hole as nice. We're also going to try the same props on my uncle's Banana BFN (stock 330hp + a DUI). |

Yeah last year with just me and a passenger in the observers seat, I think it was 49.8mph...don't remember the tach reading though. I would like to see if it changes any with a little more weight in the back, because I don't even think the back seats were in (usually aren't) for that run.

Thats a very strong number! Thats within a few tenths of my uncle's Banana boat prior to the DUI (stock 14x14 Federal). I would have guessed the 2001 to be a tick slower than the BFN... but it looks to be pretty darn close. We'll see what he pulls this year with a better prop and the new dizzy... my guess is that he'll break 50mph.
Move that passenger from the observer seat to the rear and I bet you pick up close to 1mph. I think Joe has found that his '83 runs fastest with a driver and one passenger in back, leveling the boat side to side. |

I'll have to remember that next time I try a WOT run w/ GPS. I didn't know what to expect, and didn't really know if 49mph was good or not since I didn't have much to compare to. I do remember being pissed I couldn't quite hit 50

Ha, Id say 49.8mph is excellent. What were the water conditions like? A slight ripple seems to be ideal. Fill the gas tank and move the passenger to the rear and youre over 50mph for sure. You might get another mph if you wax the hull
Definitely note the WOT RPM's for me! My guess is that they would be right around 4400 or so. |

A slight ripple is exactly what I had. I'll try to remember the WOT run next time we're out in the 85. May be a while, the next few weekend's we'll be in the 99. Probably will be at Nashville...that's just around the corner.

Ok Tim you got me curious. What prop would you try on my BFN? Stock 14x14 on it now. WOT rpm's don't have a clue, you and Skicat have driven more than I have....lol

Tom, I think the 1598 is going to be the hot ticket for you too! It was the best all around prop we tried on our '79, even with all the top end mods. Unless you stroke the motor beyond 454ci, I am not convinced that a bigger prop is required. The 1598 should turn VERY close to the same RPM's as the stock 14x14.

Tom, if someone has a puller down at Nashville (which I would think someone would), then you could borrow mine for a little bit just to test it out. I have no intentions of putting the original Federal back on mine, so your trial would have to be a short one, but you'd be more than welcome to try it. Of course you may as well go ahead and order one because I can guarentee you're not going to want to take it off.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like the 1598 on the stock 454 w/ the 330 output is the popular choice. Is that 3 or 4 blade? I think my WOT rpm is about 4200 w/ the federal 14x14. What's the DUI acronym?

The 1598 is a 3 blade. DUI stands for Davis Unified Ignition.
