    Posted: May-29-2012 at 3:55pm
When I shift my boat in reverse, it shifts just fine, but when the prop starts turning I hear this rough sound. Kinda hard to describe, but it just dont sound right. I bought the boat last year and it made the sound then. Hasn't gotten any worse, but I thought I would ask. I try not to use reverse because of this, and if I must, I am very gentle with it.

In forward, not problem what-so-ever. Shifts fine and runs smooth. Prop turns free when I turn it by hand.

Boat is an '87 SN 2001. I think that it has a Borg Warner drive, but not 100% on that.

What are some things that I can check or look for?

Most of them making kind of whirring/whining sound when in reverse. I don't know exactly why, but it's not uncommon.

Is this beyond that?

I'd say its beyond a whinning noise. I was thinking that there was probably some type of trust bearing that takes the load when in reverse (and another that takes the forward thrust as well). Maybe this bearing was what was going out... just not sure.

When its really noticible is when the boat is moving slowly forward (less than 1mph) and I slowly shift it in reverse. Say like to stop the boat right before the dock. After it shifts, I give it a little throttle to slow/stop the boat... thats when I feel and hear this noise.

You also hear prop wash a lot more under the hull when giving throttle in reverse.

whats your rpm? it could also come from the damper plate...
If its whining its normal, if its like metal crushing I´d say something wrong!

what about the tranny fluid? when was the last time you change it? If the problem is in fact a worn gear, some metal shaving should appear in the fluid.

havent really watched the tach, but I would say its between 1k to 2k.

As far as changing the fluid, I have never changed it. I bought the boat last July. Not sure when the PO changed it last....if he ever did at all. Wouldnt hurt to go ahead and do that, that way I would know for sure when it was changed.

I'll check things out a little closer this afternoon. I might put it in the water and remove the clam shell and the floor panel so I can watch whats going on when I shift to rev. Maybe that will point to something.
If there was excessive wear in the bore of the drive shaft support bearing (the one next to the prop)would this do it? Seems like it would make some noise in forward also if that was the case.. maybe not.

Put the boat in the water yesterday afternoon to see what I could find. Removed the clamshell and the back cover over the bilge so I could see the shaft good. There is no play in the shaft coming out of tranny (either radially or axially). Also down at the prop, there is a very small amount of radial play in the bearing supporting the shaft next to the prop. Is this the cutlass bearing?

When in reverse, I do here the whinning from the tranny, but I can also here this deep like rumbling sound when I give some throttle. No its not my pipes..haha... I dont hear it so bad if I'm in reverse and idle speed.

Talking about changing the fluid, how's the best way to get the fluid out of the tranny. Didnt see a drain. pump it out maybe? Mine is a Velvet Drive, BTW, not a Borg Warner.

Borg Warner made the Velvet Drives.

Pump the fluid out of the dipstick hole.

Here is a you tube video. I can hear it at the 4sec mark and then again at 15 to 16sec mark.

All I pretty much hear is a normal reverse planetary gear set noise. I though I detected a faint "clunk" so I do suggest checking the damper plate.

OK.. Thanks for taking the time to look. When it shifts into forward, most of the time its smooth, but sometimes I hear a small squeak. I tried to search on this forum for "damper", but my browser keeps giving me an error whenever I search.

I was able to google it and find on a different forum on how to change it out.

My boat has 1,014 hrs on it. '87 model... AFAIK, the damper is original, so maybe it is time.

Wheres a good source to get a good damper plate?

Damper for Velvet at ebasicpower.com

Check your flywheel dia. For smaller diameters, here's one with cliped ends

I trimed it myself for the 302. The 312 didn't need triming.
