I have a 1989 SN 1:23 tranny. I've have it down to two props 1442 or 470. I use mostly for skiing. Does anyone run any of these props and what is your opinion on them? Maybe someone has an idea on a better one for this boat. Thanks

I run a 470 on my 89. As far as I know the motor is bone stock. It runs out to 43mph on the GPS. RPMs are around 4600-4800 at that speed, if my tach is right. I mostly wakeboard, and this prop is excellent for it. Heavily weighted (900lbs+3 people) and it will still come out noticably faster than my buddy's 22' supra (330hp) with only the factory ballast filled.

Unweighted, with only 1 or 2 people in the boat, the holeshot is almost scary. It will absolutely yank your arms off. I can't imagine what its like in Joe's 83, or in some of the other warmed over early hulls that are on this site.

Can't really speak for how it does at ski speeds. Never run a 1442.

I didn't really like the 1442 in our 1990 Nautique stock motor. It just seemed too big for the motor to turn easily. I like the bigger 1442 on our sport with the GT40 a lot more.

I have no experience with the 470. 422 on the 90 isn't bad, my all time favorite is the 654. Sorry, no exact numbers on hand.

I've heard mixed feelings about 4 blade props for the older SN with the 351s and 1:23 tranny. Not enough HP to really get the full range of use. It really helps to get others opinion. Buying 3 or 4 props to test them out could get a little salty. Thanks

That's why I don't like the big 3 blade 1442 on the lower HP motors. JMO.

The 1442 is not a "big" prop for that combo. It will turn nearly identical revs to the 470, and about 200 more rpm than the stock 14x16. Perfect on a no wake zone like my 90 which went from 4400 to 4600 rpm- right where you want to be. The 89 is a faster hull and if you're already turning 4600+ then I wouldn't prop it down with one of those 3-blades unless you do a fair amount of wake boarding. The 422 would keep you close to the same revs as the stock prop and yield better all around performance if you're at the 4600 range already.

Not sure who told you the 4-blades don't work well. Both Oj and acme would largely disagree on the 1.23 boats in general. I personally disagree and prefer the 3's but matching your wot rpms to your powerband is more important than blade count.

It does turn around 4400 to 4500 rpms. Wouldn’t mine little higher rpms. I'm looking for a better holeshot and a not losing any on the top end. Thanks

I actually gained both holeshot and 1-2mph top end speed when switching to the 470 from the stock, slightly dinged up 14x16 federal. The new CNC props really are that much more effecient.

It turns about 200 more WOT rpm than stock, in my case. The stock bottom end on a 351 is very stout and realistically good for 5500 RPM, but you'll never get that fast on stock heads and cam.

I've got the 470 on my '93 SN.
It was great for wake boarding, esp when I was living in Colorado and skiing at a high elevation and lots less HP.
Now that I'm living back in Alabama close to sea level, and doing more cruising and skiing but not much WB, I find the increased RPMs and engine noise at cruise annoying (I must be getting old).
My best friend has a '89 with stock prop and I've switched them out back and forth a few times over the last few years with the same results on his '89.

+1 for the 422 on 1989, I upgraded from an OJ Legend (some damage) and difference was significant, much better speed control and better hole-shot.

I didn't try others so cant compare but from all my reading the 422 seemed to match my requirement, mostly boarding but with a max of 1000lbs ballast on some occasions.

I found the 422 a good match for boarding, skiing and footing on my old 89 SN2001. The 470 may have a slight edge if you intend to run with a lot of ballast all the time. But the 422 is better every where else.

I love my 1442 on my '89. Use it mostly for skiing and for barefooting.
I too have the feeling my fuel consumption is pretty nice.
I even pull our showteam with the boat and pull up to ten skiers...

99 sport gt40 had 422 on that had been reworked when i got boat wouldn't turn over 4600 43-44 put on 470 and saw 4800+ but no more speed than 45 could back down throttle and hold speed 4600 45 found old stock 612 for cheap <$300 now wot 4750-4800 steady 45 hits 46 after wet sand 2000 hull and compound, polish and wax expecting 46++
that +.25 pitch was key
