A few months back I suggested that this site needed a FAQ. SO... rather than whine and not do anything about it I decided to try to start a Correct Craft Fan Frequently Asked Questions thread. There are so many worthy candidates for FAQ's. Please post links here or email me with FAQ suggestions.
I'll start with the infamous "Pete's alignment video". Alignment Video How-to video of shaft alignment - note: align shaft in strut first! Checklist(s) for buyers of wood era (before 1993) Correct Craft boats: Buying a used CC what to look for Pre-purchase checklist Advice for post-1992 Nautiques (no wood from 1993 on...) I will say, after doing just a little bit of this type of work, I can see why skins are so expensive. I spent over 10 hours on the sundeck alone. Removing hardware, old staples, cutting patterns, sewing, stretching, stapling again, etc. Factoring in my time, even at $15.00 an hour, plus materials I was in close to $200.00. In comparison, it costs about $400 for a professional sundeck skin, plus you get foam backed vinyl and fabric sealed seams* from a professional and they eat the costs if there is an error. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. |

Nice work so far... just a suggestion - if you want it to remain very useful self moderate your own thread. We (people like me) tend to ugly up these threads very quickly - but you now own the first 5 posts or so. So if something else good is suggested and you agree with it, go back and edit one of the first posts to include it. In that way you could keep a good up to date list right at the front.

Larry, good one! A video is worth 10,000 words. Very well done, and I added it above.
I love that sound. I played the video twice to just listen and enjoy. Also added another link for teak swim deck maintenance. Kevin |

I have encountered a problem that I have never heard of! I need to replace the rear main seal in the PCM 1.23:1 trans in my 2002 Ski Nautique. I have removed the retaining nut and washer that holds the output flange to the tailshaft, but the flange will not budge. I have destroyed a harmonic balancer puller trying to remove the flange. I rigged up a heavier puller using 1/4 inch steel bar stock, but all I succeeded in doing was bending the steel around the flange. I am assuming that this is the result of overheating due to lost fluid. With this in mind, I am going to pull the trans and probably go ahead and replace clutches and seals. However, I am wondering if the shaft bearing is damaged, although the boat was still pulling strong with no telltale noises. I might want to replace the output flange too, after all the force I have subjected it to trying to remove it. Has anyone else experienced a stuck output flange?

You'll get more response on this question if you start a new thread... There are some good trans guys on this site. You might be money ahead to send it out if you are unfamiliar with the process. |

Will, Just under the section heading, you will see the "new topic" icon to click on. When you get the coupling half off the trans, make sure you check to make sure the face isn't bent from your pulling it. I suggest chucking it up in the lathe and taking the dial indicator to it. Personally, I'd ship the trans up to Fantastic Finish Marine. They aren't as simple as just throwing a clutch pack and seal kit in for a rebuild. One of our top members here Eric used to own FFM. He's gone onto other things and has sold FFM to his right hand man Vince. Eric taught Vince everything he knows about marine trans's. Eric has rebuilt/fixed them when other "pros" have failed. I remember one thread where the "pro" tried twice!!! |

Thanks! I can't believe I didn't see that icon earlier (although my wife would not be surprised)!
I didn't know Eric was gone--I guess he won't be replying to the message I left for him yesterday! Yes, it has been a while since I have done any trans work, unless you count rebuilding the hydrostatic transaxle on my old John Deere lawn tractor a couple of years ago.. Thanks so much for the tips! |
