transmission recommendation

I know there are many types of transmissions available in a 1 to 1 configuration. Since I am getting a spare I have not decided what engine I will attach it to. What model is the most available and the most rebuildable that will take the most power I can put at it and still last the longest? (take the most abuse) What core should I be looking for? Thanks

I don't know tranny's but I'm pretty good at everything else, read the other thread and thanks Eric for responding to Pat we've all been waiting for that and look forward to more.

10-18-002 will also work, they go behind big blocks, instead of 5 and 4 clutch plates in forward they have 7 and 6 they will fit in place of a 10-17, they are about 1 inch longer they are rated for 475horse at 4200

I always compare transmissions to borg warners which will run like a timex, out of the ones i see 8 out of ten of them will have a cracked forward clutch cylinder (drum) recently I have seen a design change in the drum, the drums crack from high rpm shifts or mis-alignment on the 1to 1's, if you get water in these transmissions forget it, you are most certain for $$$$$, water kills the lube qaulity of the oil and causes the seal rings to seize in the grooves and it wears grooves in the case,I machine the case and install a cast iron sleeve. they are very costly to rebuild unlike a BW. with pcm's an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, change oil everytime you change engine oil,only shift at normal idle(unless emergency) check alignment every year, best done with boat in the water, if you see signs of water flush it at least 3 or 4 times, even after flushing them when i tear them apart i still find water in them. ifyou ever do have to tear into one of these expect to spend 450.00 on cluth kit and seal and gasket kit. the drum is about 240.00 if needed. a good indication of a bad drum is forward slip especially on launch,the crack will open up with torque and if you do tear into one inspect the drum very very carefully,it is hard to spot the crack,

I believe Eric is talking about the 1:1 PCM tranny, not the 1:23.

My impression was that the PP transmissions were absolutely bombproof- learn something new everyday.

I think mister average and his playground buddies shifts his nautique like he did his cuddy bayliner with an Alpha-one.

I dread opening up boxes that come from ups, if the box is light i know whats in it, 6 or 7 summers or go i maybe seen 4 or 5 per summer(pcms) now its getting close to a 1:1 ratio with borg warners and the ratio of borgs to pcm's out there is probably 1 to 50 i dont know.... i guess its personal preference on the reason i dont like them, somebody out there tried to re-invent the wheel. pcm advertises its a lightweight tranny.....what does fat-sac advertise? i would think the extra weight would help, I think it was a matter of economics, wait till you run into a zf hurth hsw 450 d, its a cloned borg warner, out of the 2 clones guess which ones the sissy?

because of the higher horsepower i would go with paper plates(ford fmx) or alto red eagle plates , I use the red eagles when you get into the 600 hp range,just another bit of info.... also out there are thinner steel plates with these steels you can increase the pack from 5 and 4 up to 7 and 6 which brings it up to 10-18 or 72c ratings. you can easily get 20 years out of these transmissions simply by changing the oil often,fill them to the top for winter storage,
