I have a beautiful green 2000 Ski Nautique. The ONLY thing wrong with the boat is that the steering wheel shudders when I am getting a skier up out of the water.

It has a tilt wheel and there is a little play in the steering wheel in all directions. It shudders like crazy under the initial load of getting a skier up. I have taken the helm completely apart hoping that I would find something to tighten, but no luck. The play is in the shaft that attaches to the steering wheel and goes through the tilt mechanism. Around that shaft are two plastic, split bushings, one at each end. The only thing I can figure is that those plastic bushings have worn and thus there is movement of the shaft within the tilt mechanism housing.

Has anyone had this problem and does replacing the plastic bushings cure it? Know where I can purchase the bushings? I really don't want to buy a whole new tilt mechanism.

David,
Welcome to CCfan. Make sure you get some pictures and text submitted for the diary section.

Have you tried tuning the rudder to slightly load the helm?

The rudder is tuned; boat holds course extremely well. No shudder other than when pulling up skier. Play in steering wheel in all directions.

I will work on the bio.

Hi David, I sometimes have the same issue on my new boat, a 1996 super sport with tilt steering wheel. The play in the helm is serious, it feels like I can rip the steering wheel off if I try hard enough. There is no play in the steering however, this is perfect.

When pulling someone out I have no big issues, but it shudders when I load the boat for wakeboarding. I've quickly borrowed another helm and tried it: problem gone. In a few weeks I'm going to replace mine for real and maybe skip the faulty tilt mechanism this time.

Good luck!

What is the condition of your prop? You would be amazed at how small a ding can affect the steering shake especially when loading it up when pulling a skier out.

I barely touched bottom this summer, boat was not in gear, prop was not spinning and we were just drifting but the small ding in the prop made the boat shake like heck when pulling a skier out. Once under way it completely disappeared. Changed prop, boat back to normal.
You can’t change the wind but you can adjust your sails
