I'm not especially familiar with the 86, but the horn on many of them teds to be somewhere inside the air intake. I would looks somewhere under that snout as a starting point.

Are you definitely getting voltage at the switch?

Pull off one of the vents on the bow. You will see the horns sitting in there.

Your in for a treat removing them they are under the bow vents, there is a access plate that will be sealed in from inside the bow to prevent water intrusion inside the boat incase the bow goes head on into a large roller ie wake or if your not so good buddy does a loop around you while you are sitting still

Your horns most like others are probably shot .. Being my occupation I took mine out because they haven't worked since I bought my 86. I took them apart and found the diaphragm gaskets had shrunk considerable due to the years outdoors, this will cause the diaphragm not to vibrate anymore when voltage is applied thus no sound. I did fab some new material for mine to get them working again but they are not as loud as they were when new..

Take a razor blade and cut the sealer around the access plate from inside the bow, while a assistant is holding the 3/8 nut under the bow vent take a phillips screwdriver and from inside the bow remove the I think 4 or 5 stainless screws while your assistant holds the nuts from outside the boat.. then you can lower the two horns down into the bow..

Derick,
I assume you did check for voltage in and out of the switch before you changed it and are simply not throwing parts at the problem correct?

What happened after you installed the new switch?

Steps for removing the horn on a 1986 SN 2001.

1. Remove the drivers seat and base out.
2. Remove both vents on the bow.
2. You will need a friend or (son or daughter to help) small hands are a bonus for this one
3. Take a 3/8ths closed in wrench and have your helper hold it on one of the 4 nuts
4. From under the helm...wiggle your way back up underneath until you see the screws (philips) just in front of the vent lines.
5. Remove the four screws (with your helper)
6. Break the seal that holds the horn plate.
7. Drop the horn plate down from under the bow.
8. Replace the horn
9. Rewire
10. Put everything back together.

It really only took a few minutes to do this. I already had the seat out as I am rewiring under the dash.
I checked the old horn and it was definitely bad.
I saved the horn outer housing because I liked the design on them (yeah..im nuts because no one will ever see them) cleaned them up and screwed them on the new horns. They are and exact fit.
I also removed one of the vents from underneath. It made it easier to get to the four screws. Just remember to zip tie it back up.

Philip
