My question is this...I have a cover that is in pretty good shape, no holes or discoloration, but since we finally got rain here in my area I have noticed that it only slows the ater down that enters the boat. We got two inches of rain and the whole inside of the boat was full of water. Is there anything I can do to waterproof the cover?

Fabric waterproofing spray will do the trick. Works wonders. You can pick it up at most hardware stores- I know our Ace Hardware has it. Makes the water bead and roll right off.

What type of material is the cover made out of? I've had good luck re upping the waterproofing on sunbrella wih 303 fabric guard. Washed with 303 fabric cleaner beforehand.

I've used the same process on sharkskin and had zero luck... Still leaked like a sieve.

I really have no idea what the material is. I bought the boat in June and it really hasn't rained since then. The cover came with the boat. I will run to the hardware and see what they have. And we have thunderstorm warnings again. When it rains it pours...lol

+1 to what Tim said. Plan on using a gallon of that 303 waterproofing fabric guard if you want it done right. Otherwise it will only last you about a month before it starts penetrating the cover again.

(2) Questions.

1.   What is the best way to wash the cover?

2.   What is the best way to apply the 303 water proofing to the cover?

I have concerns about what the 303 may do to the rest of the boat if I apply it with the cover on the boat.

My cover is 1 yr old / from Angola Canvas Company and I believe it is Sunbrella material.

Use a pump up sprayer from Lowes / HD that you kill bugs with. Get a cheap Plastic one. Lay the cover over chairs, Trash Cans or Fence. Do not spray it on the boat. Have a sunny day so that it drys in the course of the day.

I use a presssure washer to clean my cover. I wish I could find an Industrial Laundry or washing machine to put my cover in.

I hope this helps,

Donald

I used the 303 fabric guard and it has so far done wonderful. I stretched it out on my drive way and soaked it down. It was a sunny day and it dried quickly. During a heavy rain it will not allow any water in.

I am now very disenchanted by 303 Products.

The "Aerospace Protectant" has ruined the White Letters on the rear slick of my Schwinn Sting-Ray Krate, in only 4 years.
The Fabric Guard (in my opinion) is way over priced.
For canvas, you can get the same or even better results with Olympic Waterproofer, for only 12 dollars a gallon.

Amazon has the 303 Cleaner, and Water Proofer for the best price that I was able to find. Thanks, Brett.

I also got a Solo 2-Liter Sprayer to apply the material. I just ordered this weeked to clean and protect my cover. Sunbrella recommends the 303 according to 303.

FYI,

Donald

Not sure why you would be spraying waterproofer on a bicycle tire?

I've used the 303 with excellent results on my current sunbrella cover and my previous on on my supersport. The best place I have found so far is on Amazon, and they got it to my door in 1 day with free shipping if you area Prime member. Lasts a full year, but that is down here in FL where we have heavy downpours on a daily basis in the summer time, and full, brutal sun most of the day. Most other places in the country you can probably get a few years out of it if you apply it correctly. Plan on using the full gallon.

I used a product called aquatite . It is sold to the upholstery industry and lasted me through three years of storage.
For thousands of years men have felt the irresistible urge to go to sea, and many of them died. Things got better after they invented boats.

303 protectant is not waterproofing, its like Armorall protectant it makes things shiny. 303 Fabric treatment is for waterproofing fabric type materials, mixing products in the same discussion.

The 303 Fabric Guard is a very good product for canvas covers. I've used it multiple times on convertible car tops and have been very impressed with the results. Many automatic car washings and water still beads off. Trick is to apply when its warm outside and be careful of your overspray when applying.

Not that the recommendations above are bad, but I doubt they should be applied universally.

Like I said in the other thread, a wise first step would be to identify the material your cover is made from, and get specific recommendations from there.

I use a big brush, and a bucket of hot water with Tide to clean it. I rinse it off with a pressure nozzle on the hose, and let dry. Then spray on as Donald suggest, usually draped over a fe ladders.

I used the aquatite for several years. When they went to a water based formula, I didn't like as well. It did work, but I don't think it lasted as long as the previous formula. ICBW.

I used the 303 product on my canvas cover about 5 years ago and on my Saab convertible top. It worked great and still keeps the water out of the boat. When I did mine I washed it with some mild soap and a soft brush, then once dry, I put on a tarp that covered the whole boat then put the cover over the tarp and used a roller and paint brush to apply the 303.
