Every year, mid season, my boat refuses to restart after picking up a skier. The issue is always a bad electrical connection at one of battery terminals. Here is what the connectors looks like.



One source of the problem is the post connection. No matter how much I clean and tighten them during spring reinstalation, one of them loosens up. There is only so much they can be tightened. The other problem is where the cable is clamped into the connector. Even after cleaning the wires and retightening the cable clamp bolts, the connection ultimately goes bad.

I am considering other types of connectors and whethere soldering would help. Any suggestions?

Jim, I am sorry but those connections have no application for a boat. I write them up every time. Please remove them and install crimped or soldered ring type connections and lug or military grade terminals. (or use a marine battery) Also pleas disregard the wing nuts provided and install hex nuts with spring or better yet, star washers. A quick spray of T-9 is all you need to forestall corrosion.

A marine rated battery will have threaded studs that accept a ring terminal with zero squeeze connections used at all. This is recommended.

As John mentioned, get rid of those repair type cable ends. Yes, they are junk. Get some new cables with decent terminations.

Also, I sure hope you are using a wire type terminal/post cleaner - it sounds like you are not!!!

In regards to the above mentioned Marine battery with Marine type connections: The only limitation there is that those batteries won't necessarily fit in the short Ski Nautique Battery boxes.

Here are some nice ones- Quick Solder Style—Made of tin-plated copper,McMaster-Carr. Like it says tin plated copper instead of those cheap lead ones

I bought the solder type from my local NAPA store. The terminals are pre-filled with solder. All you do is heat them up and shove the wire in. They work great.

Here are some assorted thoughts for comment:

I'd be surprised if the existing connectors were not orginal parts. I can see no reason they would have been replaced.

I am thinking I would use this connector with solder because of space constraints:



It seems that I need to know the wire gauge. There are no markings on the existing wires that help. Any ideas?

Peter, I would feel guilty about not using a wire brush, but one source of the problems is clearly the wire connection. And yes, I will be buying a wire brush so that not using one can't be the issue in the future.

Quite possibly the wire is corroded even under the insulation.

The entire cables may have to be replaced.

As mentioned, I suggest replacing the cables and going to a larger gauge as well.

True enough but I found out that battery box is much better suited to holding 12 beers and 10 lbs of ice.
