Herb Steins law is frequently para phrased in medicine as all bleeding eventually stops, but it is said with a tongue and check dark side. The bleeding can clot and the patient lives, or the patient can bleed out and die, either way the unsustainable bleeding does stop. The results of the later are far from desirable, just as failure of the US dollar/economy would be for both the rich and poor of this country. Greece and Spain can be bailed out, the US is not to big to fail, but we are to big to be rescued.

Dave....all we can hope is that we get politcians that understand the mess we are in, and really want to do something about it. Our currect leadership doesn't seem to want to stop it. But, Herb's Law should kick in at some point....very soon I hope.

Lee....Did you hear that 17 Democrat senators are requesting a "postpoment" on the Obamacare medical device tax, with the two senators from Minnesota leading the pack. Guess what? Minnesota is a major home of medical device manufacturers, and their lobbying group put pressure on the senators because it will "hurt" the industry.
Now they tell us |

Obama Gave a speech in Newtown CT yesterday. Saying "These tragedies have to end.", "Surely, we can do better than this" (Not really and stop calling me Shirley) and "We must change." (Deja vu?). So, you know, thank goodness we are done with mass killings. Obama must believe he has the ear of the nut jobs. He does not like the title food stamp president, how about the "nut job" president?

Really? Your going to politicize this, today? Something a president says to a community that just lost two classes of first graders? Poor form |

So is lip service and empty promises. He said similar things after Gabby Gifford, but what has he done? What can he do? The president made this political with his visit. Diane Feinstien made it political with her call for gun bans the next day. Obama will drop this in a week. I purposely went too this political thread and not the CT shooting thread. |

he is the one person that the whole country expects to say something comforting. although there may be no words to possibly comfort these victims . the words he chose could have been more about the survivors feelings and sadness and not about how he is going to make it better for everyone in the future .. I dont think "poor form" I think he should be held to a higher accountability in his choice of words

He can shame people like you into electing people willing to agree that sometimes it is in all of our best interests as a society to provide mental health programs, funding for school security, school psycholgists, adequate first responder resources, mental care, institutions, etc. You know all the stuff that we keep saying we should indiscriminately cut across the board to prevent the tax rates from going back to what they were under Reagan.
We do need to do better and admitting so is just human. That's why his favorability rating will jump 10 points after that speach, that is what bothers conservatives about it. Before the blood stops running we are subjected to a million cries of how this isn’t a gun problem.. before 90 percent of the country considers anything beyond what it would be like to lose someone close to us in such a manner the NRA money machine is running to crush rational conversation before it even gets started… newsflash to the other 10 percent it’s not about you or guns or an amendment that was written when the idea of a six shooter was science fiction. My thoughts and prayers today go out to family of the school psychologist who was one year away from retiring to her house directly across the lake from my camp, and the couple dozen of my former campers from Newtown that are just about the right age now to have young children. I saw the speech, I hope it brought some of them some comfort to know that the entire nation feels their pain and mourns with them… |

As soon as you start talking about gun control, it's political no matter what side you're on. This will obviously get the debate going and it was predictable that Obama would allude to it as he believes in it, as no doubt some, if not many of the families that had people killed do.
Joe, what's your source on the NRA? I haven't seen or heard anything from them other than to say they will wait to hear the facts after the investigation is complete. The endless specualtion on TV from reporters has been horrible and mostly inaccurate. I want to know how the kid obtained the guns. It's mind numbing to think about the families. Why this is happening so much says alot about our society and that's what needs to be considered. It has happened throughout history even going back to a bombing of a school in Mich. in 1927 that killed more kids, but the fact that it is so frequent now says something about what's happening to people in our country. |

I was impressed that Obama made reference to God and Jesus in his speech last night.
We have had guns for many years with only an occasional "nut case" in the past. Now we see some kind of multiple shooting almost monthly. Guns have not changed, but society has. Our tolerance for each other has been pretty much lost (some of the posts in this topic show that). Question is, What are the reasons for the change? |

Even IF they banned all gun sales tomorrow, there are still plenty of guns out there and these horrible shootings would probably continue. Even IF they confsicated all guns tomorrow, the bad guys would manage to get them, and these shootings would continue, god forbid!
The guns are just the sympton. What about banning and confiscating the video war games that de-sensitize people to mass killings. What about banning and confiscating any movie that has shooting in it? How are we going to control people that have mental illness that typically do these shootings? The shootings are horrible, and despicable and my heart breaks for the victims and their families! However, I do think the left is politicizing this tragedy to further their desire to ban guns. What is the old saying...."Never let a crisis go to waste"?? Forgot to add....We should also ban and confiscate booze, and put prohibition back into effect. Drunken driving accidents kill ~15,000 people in the USA each year. Where is the outrage about drunken driving deaths? |

As for the fiscal cliff: Republicans are playing right into Obama's hands. They won't reach agreement? fine, let's just go over "the cliff" and then the American people will know exactly who raised taxes on the middle class: The Republicans!

How many of us played "cops and robbers", "war", or "cowboys and indians" when we were kids? I couldnt begin to count how many "bad guys" I shot when I was a kid... Not once have I had a craving to actually kill someone in "real life". (ok maybe a small craving here and there, but know enough not to follow thru on it LOL)
Today, I have to be "careful" with my 6 year old grandson not to play any of these once harmless games. Again, why has society changed? |

Going over the cliff is exactly what this country needs in the long run, as sad as it is to say. Taxes need to be raised AND spending needs to be cut. That's the only way the math works to cut the deficit. We can't continue spending ourselves into recovery. Obama has already tried that twice with his failed stimulus efforts. It's going to get a lot worse before it gets any better so better buckle up and put your crash helmet on. |

The only thing that has changed is the increased media attention. The "glorification" the media puts on these has got to change. The rankings, body counts, which was the worst, just glorifys these acts. There should just be heaps of shame piled on these shooters names. But instead somehow we give them notoriety.
Something of interest I read today was that nearly all of these type of shootings occur in places where guns are banned from. The shooters are ultimate cowards in any case. Only a coward shoots defenseless people. |

Not bad, I like part of your idea. How about we don't raise tax rates, as I think we pay too much now, and it would probably hurt the economy. How about expanding the tax base to include the ~50% of the population that currently don't pay Federal Income Taxes. Everybody should have skin in the game. And, whatever tax revenue we get, that's all we spend!! No more borrowing 40 cents on every dollar we spend from China. We have got to get the spending down. Even to the draconian levels of 2002. Do you want to pay more taxes? Honestly? I sure as heck don't. I would rather take what I would have given to Uncle Sam, and buy a new boat, or car, and put somebody to work so they can then start paying taxes. In turn, that person may go out and buy a new refrigerator, putting somebody else to work, and that person would start paying taxes............!! |

Just heard a fun fact on a business news show.
For the month of November, the government took in $5 billion in revenue, but, spent $11 billion. I don't know. Doesn't seem sustainable to me, but, I guess it will go on until it can't go on. |

Sounds like we have been saved from the fiscal cliff with a plan that taxes the rich (slows growth) and increases the ten year budget deficit. Anybody still want to claim that we don't have a spending problem? I swear our republican leadership has kahunas the size of BB's.

As I heard Boehner put it this evening in an analogy, he saved 99 people from drowning, but feels bad he couldn't save all 100. But, he wasn't going to let everybody drown if he couldn't save all them. Makes sense, and the republicans had to do what they had to do.
The democrats are addicted to spending, and could care less about the deficeit and debt. Anything Obama says about deficeit reduction is merely lip service. He is totally unserious about solving the problem. But, we have the debt spending ceiling coming up. I think that will be a battle royale to try and get Obama to stop all his crazy spending. Hopefully the republicans will gain a bit more testicular fortitude for that one. |

It's being said that we will have to lie to our grandchildren when they come to us to ask how all that happened.
For example: Mr. President on Meet the Press last Sunday "...I cut spending by over 1 trillion dollars in 2011." I should add that there was no challenge to that, uh, statement. |

It is hard to comprehend how much money a trillion dollars is, yet alone SIXTEEN Trillion.
I came across this.... Kind of puts things in perspective... How long does it take to earn a TRILLION DOLLARS? I was trying to wrap my mind around how much a TRILLION DOLLARS was. The U.S. budget for 2011 is about 3.7 TRILLION DOLLARS. That is our money, just how many hours do we have to work, to make 3.7 TRILLION DOLLARS. I decided to do the math. There are 24 hours in one day. 365 days in a year. 24 X 365 days in a year, = 8,760 hours in one year. What if you had a job that paid $1,000.00 an hour. A thousand dollars an hour isn't a bad wage huh? What if you could work 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week, every day of the year. How many years would you have to work to earn 3.7 TRILLION DOLLARS? After 1 year $8,760,000.00 (8.76 million dollars) After 10 years $87,600,000.00 (87.6 million dollars) After 100 years $876,000,000.00 (876 million dollars) After 1,000 years $8,760,000,000.00 (8.76 billion dollars) After 10,000 years $87,600,000,000.00 (87.6 billion dollars) After 100,000 years $876,000,000,000.00 (876 billion dollars) After 400,000 years $3,504,000,000,000.00 9 (3.5 trillion dollars) It would take 400,000 years to earn 3.5 trillion dollars, making 1 thousand dollars an hour. I know it isn't 3.7 trillion, but I figured after 400,000 years, you could use a break. Make it just 30 minutes though, because you still have 196 billion dollars to earn. Don't worry, after your break you only have a little over 20,000 years to go, and you will have earned enough to pay for our budget for just the year 2011. |
