I am looking for 64 x-55 parts. dunphy name plates,and hole in one plates, rear stainless, vents, fuel fill, fuel vent, front and rear lights, rear lift ring-stainless trim rings, center ski ring and stainless trim, prop, step plates, rope cleates, and I am sure more to come!!

Sounds like you're missing quite a lot of parts!! Did someone part this boat out? How's the hull? De lamination of the ply?

As far as parts go, you may need to go looking for another X especially the Dunphy hull tags!! Fuel fill/vent, cleats are Perko. Rear rub plates at the transom you'll need to make. I did mine out of pre polished SS. Same with trim rings. Step plates forget but I'm working on it - generic painted white will work for awhile. The nav lights will be a problem too. The "jetson" style aft lights do come up on ebay but the bow light I have never seen anywhere.

How's the 312 and the YH carbs? Hopefully you haven't put a downdraft on the Y block!! If so, I'll never help you again! Dearbomatic trans?

I just got the boat, I dont think it was parted out. the boat had been a restoration project back in 89 that never got to far, probably missed placed a box of parts. plywood had been tacking off the transome and sides. the deck had some rot so now that is off too. the engine is all there, some one took the fuel pump off but I have it. intake and carbs intact!! thanks for any help! Russ

What are your plans for the hull sides? Bright? (stain/varnish)

Are you planning a true restoration? I have pictures if you need them.

Where did you get the boat? I try to keep track of the X's still around. Last count was at 38.

I have a ski pylon that is /was correct for an Atom Skier, Chrome plated bronze. About one inch in diameter with a four inch ring and finger. It is rough and would need work. If you are interested shoot me an e-mail and I will send photos.

Some may? I remember taking some of the windshield width and then there was 1 with the hull side height showing Craig he could get two hull sides (24") out of a 4' width of ply.

Hey guys. Another X! Cool. Thanks for the heads up Pete. Still haven't done much on mine yet, but I'm planning some work in the coming weeks.
Running the Conzi Saturday to pull a bunch of tuber kids! Oh well, while I'm not huge on tubing, I'm sure they'll have fun. Glad you got the boat Russ. You're in a very small club now!

I to am restoring a 64' X 55? so I am told the actual serial number is a 63- # but I am told there is no such thing as a 63? It is also missing the dunphy logos from the sides. I have all the other chrome. However, I am working on having some cast and then plated. I have one I can use for the casting. Part of the cost is the molds etc. Maybe we could get together and help lower the cost.

Seth,
Whoever told you this is not the person to be talking to concerning a X55!!! I suggest you stay away from him if you want a correct and true restoration.
A 63 should have a solid color vinyl deck rather that the split two tone. Unless someone did a trans swap, you should have the Dearbomatic trans if it is a 63. Does your engine/trans run? Condition of the hull?

Craig (64X55) compounded some serial/hull numbers at one time and found some numbering inconsistencies but most likely the 63 in yours is indicating the year.

You can also check the year of the engine. The numbers on the front next to the mechanical tach output. I have the numbering code if you need any help.

The X was built in 1963, 64 and 65 when Dunphy again went bankrupt. The bankruptcy is felt to be from them warranting there bottoms. The first batch of Philippine Mahogany they were using was bad. The wood used to make the ply had a fungus in it that caused the veneers to delaminate. They took lots of the boats back and put new bottoms on them. Mine didn't go back to the factory but I did end up having to put a new bottom on it back in the early 80's.

Glad to hear you found some of the parts! What trans is in yours? It was sometime in late 64 when the X's started coming through with Velvet drives direct from the factory. The Dearbo's were having a hard time with the 312's. Fine on the smaller engines though. Mine has the Velvet.

Were you ever able to open that file of pictures I sent to you? If not, I could start sending them individually!! Also, Did I send you one or two files? I think it was just the file on the dog house. I've got another one with even more pictures.

Pete, no I have not been able to open any pics you sent me!
I have a velvet drive in mine. and it is red? the for sale add said it was rebuilt. not sure why it is red, I thought it was the wrong drive but not sure??
I have replaced the sheer on the boat the last too weekends, just about time to turn it over and go over the bottom, all looks good from inside but there is some fiberglass that is not bonded to the plywood!
In the box of parts there was the logos( 1 broke) the hole in ones, the front light, rear light base (need the light pole!)and the step plates with the dunphy steplogo.(they might make good forms to make new ones.

It's not supposed to have fiberglass on the bottom!!!! It's truly "the kiss of death" for a wood boat. Someone at one time did a "half ass" on the bottom. Yes, it won't stick and all will eventually come off. It also holds water so the bottom will rot FAST!! With the hull to frame fastening failing, it flexes at joints. A layer of glass won't hold it together. Since you're flipping the hull, I suggest new ply. Removing it may also uncover some hidden surprises with the frame. My inner keel was mush under the engine. White Oak for any frame repair.

Hey I noticed this post from the past.

Not sure if you are still into Dunphy X-55s, but I just got a 1964 Dunphy X-55 from California. I has been a California boat since the 60s as far as I know- around the bay area (Novato area). I now have it in Reno, Nevada and plan to run it this summer on Lake Tahoe. It has the 292 interceptor and most of the hardware looks original. I do think the vents need re-chroming or replacing- missing the bottom piece on one of them. On the sides, the mahogoany ply laminate on the plywood has mostly come off- so I scraped the rest off and am refinishing it with mahogany ply (7mm)and will stain and spar varnish it in a natural finish (both sides and stern), then original vinyl top sides, seats and interior panels . If you have any ideas or pictures I would greatly approciate it- especially of the rear seat since it was totally missing when I got it. It has the green line Stewart Warner gauges, but I am looking for a speedometer that matches the rest of the gauges.

I would like to restore it as original as possible. The engine runs great- I just cleaned up the y side carbs and got it running pretty well. I got a rebuild kit for these and hope it will be a solid runner for sure then. The trailer looks original to the boat- made by Cal Trailers and has much surface rust but i'll sand and paint and should be fine.

Sorry I missed this post but we have been emailing each other. I sent you an email this morning about the repairs you are making.

BTW, the engine is a 312 and not the 292. Hopefully you do not have the Dearbomatic trans and your X came through with the Velvet Drive. The switch was about mid 64.

What's the matter with the Dearbo? The Dearbo C's work great, weigh half as much as a Velvet Drive and were made by Interceptor.

Stay tuned for the rest of the story Bruce.You will have a failure with that C model, the smaller cubes were not as bad, but they all failed....They were built from a few custom parts and a lot of Ford-o-Matic parts, use what you have in stock...

I've grown to like the Dearbos. No doubt they won't last forever as hard parts are very difficult to find, but if you have one that works well, I don't see the need to be in a hurry to get rid of it. The Hilpshe's love them and according to Steve, if people had only changed their fluid once in a while, there'd be a lot more of them still around.
