The tranny would be that much work, the Vdrive has about 3 times the hoses though. That ones pretty easy to talk myself out of because I would have to pull the backseat, panel and floor to show it off. I did have some floor epoxy color matches to silver cloud for the bilge. Hopefully it will go on pretty smooth and I won't have to sand and polish to make it shine which is why I passed on the gel.

It's alive! I had a lot of problems with the carb, turns out the manifold tilted the carb too much. A wedge plate took care of that. Well and setting the timing 180 off. Runs awesome now, but the motor cover doesn't fit too well. The exhaust manifolds are a little too wide. I can get it on, but will have to fiberglass in some small pockets. I might wait till winter. Don't tinkering for now.
She sounds good!! Just a little thump and perfect exhaust note. Not too loud, not too quiet! |

Which way did you tilt the carb, and how much, I can see the tilt on mine too,my motor sits pretty flat in the boat. With the engine being backerds I might need to go the opposite way.

Check out Joe in New York's engine box modification. He was able to reuse the upholstery after making pockets for his hiteks- pretty slick. I cut my box in half and widened it- no saving my vinyl.
Did you open it up yet? Gotta be a 53mph boat, I would think. Really looking forward to checking this boat out at GL. |

She runs awesome. The only issue I have is it will run 5900 rpms. I have the acme 540 and not sure if I should re-prop, but at what point is too many rpms on the 351. The rings and bearings looked new, so we didn't tear it down completely.
I backed out of the throttle as it hit 5900 rpms. I know if I stayed in it, it will hit 6000 plus. What do you guys think? |

What was your speed?
Did it level off at some point or was it still pulling all the way to 5900? |

the airguides only go to 50 and they were pegged. I backed out before it hit 6. It was still pulling.

Double check the RPM's with a shop tach. |

I agree with Pete. The numbers you're claiming are a good bit beyond what we've come to expect from this combo. Verify the tach is correct and get a GPS on the thing. Alan's 55mph 380hp '81 ran 5800 or so with the 540 and required a 430 to get the revs back down, but I don't think you're quite at that power level.

I haven't verified the tach. Not sure how too, but I don't have any reason to think it isn't right. The speedos we set by gps. I have not dynoed the engine, but i do know, its running between 5800 and 5900 before I backed it out. I just don't think I should bew running that close to 6000 WOT. That was with three in the boat too.

It's possible that you have a fast hull that's giving you a higher top end than is typical with the gt40/gt40p upgrade, but I'd be darn sure that's the case before re propping. Get a shop tach and compare it to yours and see how close they are. If original, I wouldn't put much faith in the old Teleflex. Also get a GPS on the thing. If you're doing 53, tht alone would make me think the tach is lying. If its 56-57, that's something else altogether.
While I wouldn't spin the thing to the moon, going to a larger prop puts more stress on the engine and tranny, so keep that in mind. |

Hell, I'll just leave the 540 on it. Easier on everything. I just get spooked when the tack is around 6 on a 36yr old engine. It sure sounds nice. I need to check the gps and let you know.
Thanks for all your input. I pretty much did what everyone on this forum said to do and it runs like a champ. Now if I can find that loudmouth with the new mastercrap! |

Don't get me wrong- if that 6k rpm is legit, I'd be looking at a 430. I just wouldn't necessarily believe it without better data. If, in reality, you're closer to 5500, then the 540 is probably what I'd keep on there.

I really would not trust the Teleflex from 1977. |

I have to agree with these guys sounds a bit high with your build add-on's.
With the 1:1 the GPS will tell if the tach is good or not. |
