hello guys, I have a question, im wondering about the packing or repacking of the drive shaft, is this something that is regularly done, how do i know if mine needs it? I have looked up some threads on this but didnt really find the info I needed (maybe I just didnt see the right one I needed) I have seen where people have done this every year,but I havent done mine and dont know how. I have a 85 2001. thanks for any help Jeff

Jeff - Replacement of the packing material isn't needed each year (should last for 15+ years) but adjustment of the compression should be monitored & adjusted (if needed) regularly.
To adjust it, just loosen the safety wire, loosen the lock nut (sometimes easier said than done - may have to get a pipe wrench) & then adjust the gland nut. Shoot for 5-6 drips per minute. Tighten the lock nut & replace safety wire. |

Chris,
Maybe Jeff got the idea of needing a packing change every year from some marina looking for more BS business!  It's like a auto service center saying you should change the air in your tires every year!

Jeff I missed you on the lake today we had a good morning on the water. I even got a few pulls in on the new board.
I can help you check the shaft packing next time we are out. I repacked my stuffing box while I had my boat all apart. If it has never been done it may be due, but odds are that it can be adjusted. Its an easy replacement once you have the shaft out

Its always nice during the week. No wait at the ramp, flat water for days, and no johnny law out there. Will talk to you this weekend.
With the packing there are really only 2 things that can happen. Either too much water passes through and you get a lot of water in the bilge or its too tight and not enough water passes through to keep it cool. If it has been over tightened the stuffing will burn up and a steady leak will develop which was the state mine was in when I took it apart. We'll get you straight! |

Rather than starting a new thread, this one is along the lines of the info I'm looking for. I replaced my shaft packing this Spring and the first time out the gland nut was running hot. I've adjusted it a few times and currently it drips maybe every minute or two. Reading some of these threads, it seems that if the gland nut is cool to the touch after driving the boat for a while, the shaft packing is fine? It isn't dripping as much as is "recommended" on here, so I want to be sure.
