I have a leaking freeze plug (small split). I guess this is what I get when you install a galvanized plug as opposed to a brass one.
My question is what is the method of removal?

Use a drift and hammer to knock the plug in, ideally spin it while still pressed in so half is in the block and half out. Then grab it with pliers or vice grips and pull it out. Drive a new brass plug in with a hammer and appropriately sized socket.

I can't tell you if this is the "correct" way is but I can tell you what I have done without any problems.

Give it a tap toward the edge with a hammer and punch. Just enough to dislodge it. It should pop the opposite edge free of the block. Then a big ass combination pliers with a small piece of wood between it and the block just levers it out. Doesn't have to complicated.
The only caution I have is banging on the punch too hard. Some of these plugs are pretty close to the inside casting of the block so really banging on them might possibly damage the block. I have no idea how hard of shot it would take to do that though.
I'm sure someone probably has an alterative "correct" method.
When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.
