Is it possible to install a supercharger on a stock 351 engine? I found a website that sells the kit for a 351 carbureted engine. It's not a ton of money either. Here's the site: Supercharger

That would sound sweet under the cover. Nice hole shot I would imagine.

It would probably be fine as long as youre not running tons of boost on stock internals. I believe there are 1 or 2 MC guys who have superchargers.
The 6.5 psi of boost @5500 RPM that Paxton is claiming with that kit *might* be low enough. Looks like the mounting locations may cause engine box clearance issues though. Are you planning a winter project Ken? |

with a std rotation motor no problem, not possible with a reverse rotation motor unless you build a gear drive to reverse the superchargers rotation

Ahh, got ya 79. I wonder if anyone makes the reverse rotation supercharger.
I'm keeping all my options open, Tim. Labor would probably be big bucks. I don't think I could tackle this type of install myself. This would be awesome power, but I need to weigh out my priorities. A new truck is my next investment. I think Ford is paying people to buy their trucks and SUV's! Ken |

You would need a super charger with blades/splines what ever they're called in a reverse pattern to work on a reverse engine.

Haha, no supercharger for me... yet
I think a 393w stroker motor would be pretty cool though! |

That's right, M3Fan. Tim will have his engine torn apart and ready for a supercharger in no time. We'll get your '90 up to 400HP, Tim! Just imagine....

Mmmm... 400HP
Thats my conservative goal for the next major rebuild, if I ever get there. Im thinking the next serious power adder I do will be some new exhaust manifolds. I better save my pennies! |

Maybe I've crossed the line here, but what about installing one of these engines in a boat?

Now your just being silly
Seriously though I doubt the turbos would enjoy the wet exhaust going through them, better to stick with the supercharger.. |

Turbos would be hard to do on our marine engines since we have wet exhaust. I think PCM had been developing the 5.4L Ford motor for marine use but it never made it to production. It would be much easier to build a motor that has marinized parts available. I like the Ford 351w but there are many more parts available for the Chevy motors, both small and big block.

Just trying to push the limits of a finely tuned ski boat. What is the max power you could drop in a 80's or 90's style Nautique without tearing things up? You figure in 2000, CC dropped the 8.1, 425 HP in a regular Nautique. I don't know what the performance ratings were for that, but it was possible. What's the issue with re-enforcing a 1:1 direct drive and dropping a 396 or other HO engine? I bet 500HP would be the max, with some more pitch added to the prop. It would have to be a high output small block to fit.
At least we can imagine, but you know somebody out there will put it to the test. Ken |

Ive heard that the TSC1 Ski Nautique with the Python (496/502) would do 52-54, and that was not a very fast hull. As far as I know, the PCM 1.23:1 was the tranny used with those boats. In the older Barefoot Nautiques with the 454, what transmission was used? Was it a similar model to that used on the 351w?
The big blocks would obviously fit in a Nautique, but they weigh quite a bit more than a small block. You'd need a bigger engine cover, too. The nice thing about the small blocks is that theres tons of performance parts out there, and relatively speaking, theyre pretty cheap. You could build a real nice 400+ HP small block for $5k in parts. Im sure Bill (SS-201) could add a lot to this conversation- he knows how to make a Nautique fast. |

$5,000 isn't a ton of money in parts if you consider a new Nautique is $45-55K. I love my hull design and the interior is mint...plus it's paid off.
The two things I'd do to my '86 if I had cash burning holes in my pocket would be maxing out the engine potential and installing a quality sound system. Both investments would be concealed for the most part and wouldn't look cheesy. It would make a hit at the reunion! Ken |

All of this high horsepower talk, you can actually over power a prop.

If I remember correctly, the Nautiques they used for the Ski Flying at the Masters a couple years ago were supercharged. Those things would haul butt when they hit the throttle. (sound awsome as well).

What does that mean? It will fail under high HP conditions? Is there a way to get a stronger prop?

I believe the 1999 or 2000 Ski Nautiques offered a couple of interesting engine packages. The 8.1, 425 HP Python and there was a supercharged Ford engine putting out around 400HP. They seemed to have been very limited editions if my memory serves me correctly. I would absolutely love to hear one of those supercharged engines spool up to top speed.

I only think there was 1 supercharged (off the ford lightning motor ??) 2000 ski made, and it was for ski fly. it was red hull, white stripe red deck.

This should be the engine:
Engine: supercharged 5.4-liter V-8, 360 hp I saw a write-up on the tournament. I thought this was a limited production engine, but I'm probably wrong. The 8.1 was an option, but seemed to fizzle out fast. Ken |

A write-up from Ford on that engine:
Ford plans to target markets with engines that range from a compact I-4 to the brawny V-8 and V-10 Triton engines. For the serious performance boater, Ford will also offer the 5.4L Supercharged version of the "Lightning" engine that is featured exclusively in the Ford SVT Lightning pick-up truck. Ford Power Products is also collaborating with Michigan-based Sterling Performance Engines, a specialist in offshore and other high-performance engines, on marinization packages. |

I've only heard of that motor making it into 1 nautique, and "skinautique" had a picture of it in his gallery over at PN, which isnt' working right now. I have the picture on my home computer I can post later. I have no clue if it made it's way into any other boats.

You mean this one?
I traded emails with PCM a few years ago when they were experimenting with the motor. At some point the decision was made to switch over to Chevy 350's and the 6.0L instead of pursuing development of the supercharged Ford. It was never an option to purchase from CC. |

YES, that's the monkey, Tim. I would love to give one of those a whirl. Actually, I think it's 380HP with crazy torque. That has to have some serious get up and go. Isn't it lighter than the 8.1 Python? Not to mention it looks awesome. Do we know anyone who owns one?

Ken,
IIRC, that was the only one made. There are a few SNs with the python though. I think there are two users on PN with them, one goes by rocco. |
