A friend is working on checking shaft alignment and he said the shaft coupler comes right of. Some sort of key-way, set screw setup. But the set screws don't line up, as the dimples are 90 degrees to the keyway and the set screws 45 degrees. My friend was given a spare shaft with the boat with the dimples at the proper position. Would this be the proper shaft?
This is on an older Martinique BR. See pics... |

Even though these couplers are press-fit into place, are they all still setup with the keyway? I have a new boat but have never had the coupler off the shaft. Intel on here indicates these couples down't come off easily ;-)

That shaft looks worked.
A good machinist can knurl it(coupling end of shaft) if its within a certain wear ratio and regain the heat shrink fit. You can also go with a split coupling bored and mill-matched. What cannot happen is to re-install a loos coupling and rely upon the grub screws and key stock. It is all coming out and going to the Dr.s office. >> pull it. |

I don't think knurling will provide the same solid connection as a correct size. You end up messing with it soon if you just knurl it.

I totally agree. The coupling is fretted from misalignment. Knurling is a poor way to repair a bad fit. If the shaft is still good, a new coupling half is needed bored to match the shaft. The dial indicator on the front of the shaft isn't going to tell much since you will get too much movement without any support. I'd get it out of the boat and set up in V blocks to check it. |

I haven't! However, I always worry about how concentric the run as well as the imbalance they may cause. My ARE just came today for my Tique. Eric you maybe missed it but my son trashed the Tique last fall. New prop, shaft and strut> The strut was pretty bad. In the press, the old one showed a crack when I was trying to straighten it. |

Pete, I also received my ARE shaft today. I'm very excited to install it. Are you planning on using the nylock nut that came on it? Also I'm putting a brand new prop on it..... Lapping the new prop on a brand new shaft should be a cake walk right? Not that it's that hard but it will be a new procedure for me. Thanks, Tony.

Tony,
Yes, I do plan on using the brass nylock nut. I haven't removed it from the shaft yet to see if there is a cross drilled hole for a cotter but I have a feeling there isn't one. Don't forget, the nut is there to seat the prop on the taper and really doesn't hold the prop onto a properly lapped taper. I have commented before that I have seen boats without any nuts!! Lapping is VERY important on a new prop and shaft. Tapers can be off and the lapping matches the taper. |
