New to the forum. Just got 1986 cc put in new battery and won't stay charged. Alternator is charging while running but battery losses voltage slowly while sitting. Had it on the water started right up first to days dead third morning. Last week took it out started up and then dead again after a short swim, BBQ break. Battery was charged in between outings and disconnected

Dan,
First welcome to CCfan. Get us some pictures. We love them. You have a parasitic load. Follow this procedure BTW, I hope you didn't buy a deep cycle battery. Automotive starting types are fine. You will find plenty to read here on the subject. |

I shut off all of the breakers (out position) when we are not using the boat. The depth finder runs if the breaker is on, drawing power.

Thanks for the response guys. I should have some time do the test tomorrow. Will get some pics up too. I did get deep cycle battery and was planning on adding a second with a selector switch for stereo. Am I going about this wrong? Of course once I get my current issue worked out.

A deep cycle will not work for starting the engine.

Yes, you are going about it wrong. Why the deep cycle? You do not have a trolling motor that uses a small amount of current over a long time. The starting battery is designed for a large current draw over a short period of time. Sometimes the salespeople at the store are so naive that if you ask them for a marine (not needed), they will sell you a deep. |
