I am looking at a 1997 F150 supercrew with 126k miles and the 4.6l V8 just to have a pickup for general use. It is 2wd, no rust, body/paint very nice. Any pros/cons from other owners out there. I have never owned a Ford and don't have any objections with them just not familiar so I thought you guys could offer up your experiences. I only tow our boat ~ 4,000lbs (outfitted & fueled) about 12-15 miles to boat ramp.

I wouldn't want a 2WD only. Sometimes at the ramp there's a need for 4WD.

Sounds like he knows his ramp well enough to consider a 2wd truck. I've never used 4wd at a ramp but have seen a few that I wouldn't try without! I think p_allen has a very similar truck, try PM'ing him.

Been doing the ramps with 2wd Trailblazer of regular length and extended lenght for years - even striper fishing the lake in January never had a problem with 2wd when it was at/near freezing - the ramps are very good and not extremely steep
Just want a good all purpose pickup and this one is nice. |

some of them puke spark plugs. i think that's mostly the 5.4 triton though.

I don't think the 4.6 ever shot the spark plugs out. Pretty reliable engine. I ran one to death one summer with over 200k on it in a non super duty f250. It had no torque whatsoever but it took all I could throw at it like a champ.

The E4OD tranny can die after 100,000 miles. Not a cheap rebuild. Engines tight except replacing coil packs maybe.

I beat a '96 4.6L to death (company work truck that I ran for 100k) and it never let me down. Single cab longbed XLT trimmed. It was a great truck.
Don't let the 2WD scare you. My Tundra is 2WD w/ 100K on it now and it has never been a problem at any ramp I've been on, granted I'm running 35x12.50 tires. The ramp at Parramore's at SJRR is about the hairiest I've been on (loose gravel, off camber and steep drop-off) and even it wasn't a problem. I think you'll be really happy with that Ford. |

Used to pull out 3 times a week in college on a pea gravel ramp with my 2wd rt dakota. never stuck once.

I just started towing with my 4.6 Lincoln "150"
 Pulled 2different Mustangs out at different ramps at GL with no trouble, I don't even think the traction control even kicked in. I would think at a ramp if you had trouble starting you could use the boat to help push if needed. The only trouble I have heard and I'm not even sure they are on the trucks,is the plastic intake manifolds. Not sure why but I think it was the V10's that poped out plugs and it always seemed to be the ones hardest to reach. Our mechanic at work,who bled Fords was not happy. |

Dad had towed this from Florida to Illinois and back with a
tandem trailer with no problem. It does have a 355 rear in it, not sure what a 150 has.

Gary, I used to have a 4.7 5 speed 4x4 Dakota. You bet your left one I had the boat in gear pushing that truck if I had someone I didn't fully trust behind the wheel. |

I have a 04 F-150, best darn truck i have ever had. Great tow vehicle for what I tow, 200's,TXI's and 197's. don't have a problem jumping out in the left lane to pass a Semi!! 5.4 package, SWB, 2 wheel drive.
 Did mention it is a SVT Lightning!! |

Have had 4....loved everyone of them. Three were 4wd but now run 2wd..no problem.
Just got back from a roadtrip to TN..13.5 hours running at 70..air on..towing the boat..did 13.5-14.3 mpg in complete comfort. john |
