it is time to rebuild the carb on my 1986 nautique 2001. the carbs list # is 9392. the guy at the local parts store didnt have a marine rebuild kit for it so he gave me a automobile carb(4160). is every thing the same on the 2 carbs? what do i need to do differently? do the floats have to be set different on a marine carb? anything else i shold know?

Click on the Discount Inboard Marine Ad at the top of this page They will have the kit. and a 10% discount on it. It's a straight forward rebuild Just like an auto

I can tell you from experience.....spend the extra money and buy the kit from SKIDIM. The Holley rebuild kit from an auto parts store for a 4160 may be cheaper, but there are so many different versions of the 4160 that the generic kit does not have all the parts you need.

I actually bought my Holley re-build kit from rex marine. Get the numbers off the carb and go to Holley's website and you can get the holley kit number for the carb you have. They where a little cheaper than skidim. I think I spent around 45 bucks for the kit. Don't use anything otherthan a holley kit

When should you rebuild your carb?
If everything seems to be running fine, is there a reason to rebuild? Are the performance benefits to rebuilding every XX years? Thanks, Keith |

I would say no there are no advatages to rebuilding a carb when everything is working proberly. Usually the needle and seat wear out or the float goes bad or the diaphrams get a hole in them. Usually when the engine isn't running correctly and it is directly related to fuel delivery problem then that's when you need to re-build i.e. surge at idle, back firing, poor top-end performance, hard starting, mis-fire on take off, rough idle. you also need to keep in mind that some of these can be cause by other components as well or you can fix some carb problems without a total re-build i.e. power valve is blown, replacing the diaphram on the accellerator pump, choke stat come to mind.
