I think I remember that now. I'll pull it out of storage and try to spin it on the bench and see whether it works. That's how I test all the units that I rebuild. The C is the one that is not integral with the bellhousing, right?

I am afraid I do have the Dearbomatic. It worked great with the trans oil that came with it, until I changed the fluid and put ATF in it. With ATF it ran fine on the lake for awhile, then after it got warm it started slipping. If I turned it off for awhile on the lake, it would go again, but slowly.
It is the "C" model in the yellow interceptor manual and has its own oil pump internal. I got hold of the Hilpisch father and son and they mentioned it should have 30 weight in it or 15W40. When I put 15W40 in there it immediately turns even while in neutral. Once it warms up it begins to act more normally and while running on trailer I can get it to stop in neutral and do both forward and reverse- but not consistently. Steve Sr. mentioned I should have at least 100 psi to get forward and reverse and I checked it and I have 120 psi, so that's not a problem. Interesting thing about the tranny is when it does engage it makes a bit of a whining / low growling sound- that's how I can tell it is engaging and turning normally. I would like to keep my Dearbomatic and wonder if I can pull it and work on it myself- I am pretty good mechanically if I can get some insight on what I need to fix. I would post a picture of it, but can't figure out how to do that just yet- BTW, the Dunphy X55 it sits in just won 2nd place in Class at the South Lake Tahoe Classic show end of July- I'd like to post a picture of that, too if I can figure that out. |

do you have any knowledge of the Dearbomatic model "C" transmission? I'm having issues getrting a good read on the right fluid to put in it. the interceptor manual says put type "A" hydraulic transmission fluid in it.

Nice looking Dunphe Mitch! We have 2 model C's in boats and run Dextron III in both of them. Eric Levine on this site rebuilt one of ours, but I don't believe he rebuilds trannys anymore. I had talked to the Hilpisch's and they were not interested in rebuilding them for other people. I have since met a guy in South Portland Maine that rebuilds them. We're going to have our other one rebuilt if we can ever find time to pull it from the boat. It works well, but has a dirty neutral. As long as they don't need hard parts, they can be rebuilt.

Congratulations on the award. It looks like you didn't take my advice on the bottom paint.
That show wasn't ACBS judged so they overlooked the bottom paint being wrong. WHY didn't you go with the copper bronze????   If I was judging, I would have knocked off a couple points especially since you asked what bottom paint should be on your X55 and didn't follow through. The Pettit is an acceptable substitute with a no point deduction. |

However that is not my boat, But if it was I would be Happy Happy! Even with the bottom paint He Painted it with. I think the boat looks great!! EVEN BETTER THAN YOURS!! But than again I am not judging! |

Thank's for your input. It's always a pleasure to hear from fellow wood (or classic) boat owner who are so well educated especially when it comes down to the ACBS judging guidelines. I however, do need to ask when you saw my X55 ether in person or pictures? I did have it at GL several years ago. FYI, my X55 has won a couple best of class's in ACBS judged shows. I'm curious about your opinion about mine. BTW, one thing I did not mention and since you seem to be such an expert, did you happen to notice the stain Mitch used does not have enough red in it? Look at the original Dunphy brochures. It may just be my monitor however, you seem to be an expert so tell me. |
