Looking for missing screws - 1991 BFN windshield.... Upper corner and side wing. Site search didn't help. Jody rec'd McMaster-Carr which is great starting point but I don't know length, size or if they are black oxide SS or painted SS.... plus they sell packs of 25-100 (a little more than I need!)

Anyone have a few laying around----- Zach? Tim? Townsend?

Steve,
Stay away from the black oxide. The coating isn't very rust resistant.

If you don't get an exact answer, see what screw size will fit the hole and then measure for the length needed.

OK..... isn't black oxide a finish on Stainless Steel? So, it will rust? What do I get then on a black windshield ......?

(Man, I cannot seem to spell windshield for the life of me!!!)

Steve,
Black oxide is a very cheap finish typically used on carbon steels. You'll see it alot on fixturing for machine tools. I've never seen it used on Stainless.

If i'm following, the screws needed are a "truss" head. The heads are bigger in diameter. If "push came to shove", you could always go to a well stocked hardware store, get the screws and paint them black?

This is what I am getting from McMaster-Carr:

#8 3/8 inch (I think) SS Sheet metal screw - says Black Oxide finish Stainless Steel

And they look like this:

I might just stay local and paint them, if black oxide is cheap and on potentially rusting stock.......

Those look perfect Steve- break out the micrometer on an costing screw if you want to confirm the size. No extras here but I know where to find some now if I need some!

The McMaster-Carr look perfect? The ones pictured are an image stolen from another member doing a refurb (He has no others)..... I have asked him to measure but haven't heard back.

If they are correct, I'll buy 100 and distribute to anyone who needs them...........

I'll probably need a few of those.... I have a 91 and will be eventually removing the windshield frame to have it anodized black...
Let me know if you need a few bucks...

Will do Mike - Get Rod to measure his loose screws to make sure. I haven't gotten to my BFN to pull a remaining screw yet... 3/8 inch?

Tim- So you are saying the Mcmaster-Carr screws are correct - right?

Steve, dont worry about me- if and when I need some, I wouldnt be able to put my hands on the ones you give me and I'd need to order a new box anyways.

Post up the part number you determine to be correct though- that'll help a lot of people!

Steve K,

I'm wondering if you and Tim have your wires crossed. He said "Those look perfect", referring to the photo, I believe.

I get the impression you are looking at these from MC:

90356A259: Pan Head Phillips Screw for Sheet Metal, Black-Oxide 18-8 Stainless Steel, Number 8 Size, 1/2" Length

You need to measure the head diameter on an existing windshield screw. The screws in the photo look to me like either Round Head (94005A411) or Truss Head (93406A195 or 93406A194), not Pan Head, but it's hard to tell from that photo. Neither are available in black from MC.

I think they're truss head, but it's hard to tell at that viewing angle.
