Excuse my ignorance, this is my first time doing this.
I want to strip this block to send it out and the first step is to remove this item so I can get it on a stand. What is it called and are there any unexpected suprises (ie: springloaded anything, etc.)coming at me as I remove it. Thanks. |

its called a bellhousing, nothing will fly out and that is your spring damper on the inside, better stay close to the computer....make sure you replace that damper too..(ounce of prevention)a good tip on re-installation of the spring damper:if you can leave the bolts loose then tighten them up after you install the transmission, it will allow you to center the damper on the input shaft and flywheel, you may have to go thru the starter hole or an inspection cover

Thanks Eric. I've read all your posts and you have helped to educate me, and I appreciate that.
When you say replace the damper, you mean a new one when I am putting the block back together, correct? Also, thank you for the advice about staying close to the computer, I know you are right about that. I'm glad I have an internet connection in the workshop so I can annoy all the CCF members with my questions! |

yes, it is an in-expensive part that will cause you grief down the road if not replaced, you really cant tell if they are good or not by sight, but if you look where the springs meet the plate they will probably be round corners wore into it and it is impossible to tell if the springs have lost tension
