I'm in the process of replacing the stringers in a 73 Skier, and would like to know which of the thru-hull fittings(scuppers, rudder, pylon base, various stuff on the transom) have wood backing plates. I haven't found a definitive answer as to which ones are layers of fiberglass and which ones have wood in them. I did read in one thread about someone who was grinding and grinding only to find out that there was no wood to be found. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Tom,
Since CC was so inconsistent, I would suggest you open up every built up area. You never know what you will find. If the hull has a raised area, the chances are good you will find wood under it and most likely with rot! |

I will do that. Better to be safe than sorry. This is a serious time investment, and it would be just plain dumb to cut any corners(metaphorically speaking). This stringer job is every bit as tedious as everybody says.

How do the exhaust pipes come out of the hull? Mine seem to be glassed to the hull from the inside. Someone had done some exhaust repairs in the past as the floor has been re-glassed on both sides along the path of the rubber exhaust hose. How should I go about removing them?

To clarify that, I have already removed the floor and rubber exhaust hose. I am attempting to remove the metal "tips" from the hull.

Usually there is a wood block fiberglassed in that area. A hole is cut to the size of the tip for a friction fit,then the tip was installed with sealer
