Thanks Guy's. was my suspicion it was a paragon there was not a ID tag on it, now to identify model. was bolted to a 305 Chevy in a bigger Chris Craft. I am re-powering the Chris with a 340 HP 350 Chevy. Not sure if this little gear will survive with the bigger HP and torque.
Thanks again.

I agree! I feel the Paragons are better than the Velvet's! You sure don't want a PCM!

Too bad Eric isn't around anymore - he worked for Paragon in his early life learning the marine transmissions.

Come on now Pete... I know those PCM's are considered new-fangled technology, but if they were in any way problematic, dont you think it'd be well documented by now? CC has been using them pretty much exlusively for 25 years now! By all accounts, theyre every bit as tough as the BW's, maybe more so.

CC put those 1.23 boxes behind the direct drive Pythons (which swing 13x18 props and require a 1-1/8" shaft) and those are no problem. Joe has twisted how many 1" shafts apart with his monster 408w? Rumor has it that tranny has never had its fluid changed either. Talk about bullet proof!

Yea, I haven't had one call or seen one boat in the shop with a bad 1.23:1. Seals sometimes yes but never a transmission issue outside of that.

I rode in Joes boat, that thing is brutal. That transmission made a lot of noise I have never heard from a 1.23. If it can survive that I consider it unbreakable. ha.

I talked To Art Cozier about it the other day. Art like me has live in a sheltered world as far as looking out side the Correct Craft World. Art had very limited experience with the Hydraulic style Paragon and had better knowledge of the Crash box Paragons(old).
As far as the PCM transmissions they are pretty robust to a degree. one of their shortcomings is keeping the retainer ring in the drum. Sad part about that is when they do spit the ring it usually tears up the housing. PCM has now replaced the old series 40 version with a new series 80. I know my new boat is electric shift other then that I will be schooling myself on the series 80 transmissions just to know what the differences are.
Thanks again for the info on the Paragon, I feel somewhat better about installing it back in the Chris Craft.

Let’s not curse my transmission by saying nice things about it. It only has about 650 babied hours on it, no reason why it shouldn’t be doing well. There is a decent chance it will get its first transmission fluid change this year because it is going to be here in the spring and not in NC like the last few years.
