Those with good memory here will remember my long-term project boat. Today I finished getting the carpet installed. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. Tomorrow I'll work on getting the seats installed.

Thanks. It looks good because I am SLOW... I think I've cut each piece of carpet three times. Measure, measure, measure once more then cut generously and check fit. Trim, check fit. Trim, check fit... As most things have gone on the project it is not difficult, it just takes time and patience.

I got the interior put in today. I still have a lot of alignment / adjusting to do to make all the stripes align and such, but if you want to see it I've posted some photos on my blog:

Today I borrowed a home made prop puller from a local marine place (a great shop in the Everett area) and got my first experience in removing a propeller. I'm fairly certain it was the OEM prop, so it's been on there 21 years. I cranked on the puller something fierce and like suggested here I heated it up. It didn't work at first so I rotated the puller and cranked it down again. I read the forums some more and decided that I needed more time with the torch. So I heated and heated and heated... PING! Off came the old prop. It was fun. I had to wait for a while for everything to cool down to touch it. I installed my 422 (surprised how small it looked) and then puttered around with a few interior items before trying to install the swim platform.

That metal tab in the middle - is that supposed to touch the platform? I can't get the platform all the way down before it hits the rubber seal across the back. The platform wood does not touch the little L-bracket in the middle and the brackets don't "bottom out" either. Is this good or bad? The swim platform is the right one, but it is from another boat. I can post some pictures if that would help.

Nothing is easy.

First of all what kind of carpet and where did you get it?

When the platform is down the holes for the pins should be In place, check that to see if it is true lily all the way down. If it is then you may need to move the center section up. I don't remember the name of the stuff, but I posted about something that removes 5200 in my CHI thread last year. 5200 took the gel off behind one of my mounts when used a pry bar to remove it. Good stuff ' just a squirt and 5200 pieces come off by hand.

Most boats I've seen didn't have the middle bracket touching the platform. Don't worry about that. The other brackets should bottom out. Drill a fresh set of cotter pin holes if needed.

Hollywood - I like your answer because that is what I was thinking of doing. The platform definitely bottoms out on that L-shaped seal that goes along the back. To get everything to bottom out I would have to remove the brackets from the back of the boat and move them up. Not a fun idea.

I wonder what that little bracket in the middle is supposed to do?

I got the carpet from an upholstery / fabric supply place that my cousin uses for his shop. It is called Keyston Brothers Link, and they are a true wholesale fabrication industry shop. That is, they are set up to service shops that do upholstery work.

You could shim it if you really wanted it to touch. I would definitely not bother remounting it. I'm not sure the platform could deflect enough to ever make contact on some of the larger gaps.

It keeps the load on the brackets going the way it is designed to, if it's not there and you stood in the middle it would put a twisting load on the brackets. That might not break them, but if it moves them enough the platform wouldn't come off.

That's not moonshine in those 2 jars sitting there is it? Or I guess the way it looks, was it. If I laid the carpet drinking that, I would have it on the dash not the floor!

With or without the shine, your carpet looks great!

Those jars are holding my glue. Unless you work in a well-ventilated area the effect of breathing those fumes is similar to the effects of a jar of shine... :)

I think I will shim that little bracket with a piece of wood or something. Maybe I can find a small piece of teak somewhere to screw into the bracket. I'm not sure the platform will flex much because the fit against seal is so tight, but I am all about having too much support / redundant systems. Perhaps my Aerospace background is showing.

Some adhesive backed rubber aught to do that job too.

I'm not very familiar with NWZ hulls, so I don't really understand what all is going on here with that gasket and lip but nonetheless I would want my 2 main brackets absolutely bottoming out. You can shim the platform on their brackets too if the teak itself is stopping you.

Hollywood, can you take a photo of your platform on that boat there? It looks like the platform would not hit that middle bracket at all.

How would I shim the platform on the brackets? With wood? If I did that the platform would stick up above the rear deck (the black foam / rubber strip along the back of the boat in the photo above).

The platform does not need to touch the middle tab and I don't own a NWZ.

I would want the outside brackets bottoming out. That is where the weight should be supported. If the wood is stopping short of the brackets bottoming out because of the lip at the gasket shimming them will push them down until they do.

Bottom out the brackets or the platform will be loose and wobbly, getting worse over time. Do the cotter pin holes line up as is? Don't worry about that stupid gasket/seal or the middle L support. Neither are really needed. The center support is only there for extreme cases (breaching one of quinner's girlfriends). It was a big to do about fumes and they solved that problem with a solid platform.

That picture there is exactly what mine looks like, minus those awesome chrome dual exhaust tips. What I notice there is that the L-bracket in the middle is below the level of the rubber seal. So, how does the platform end up resting on the bracket?

I did some more looking and thinking and I wonder if the problem is that my platform is screwed in too close to the boat? That is, the wood edge of the platform is hitting on the screws that attach the rubber seal, and this is holding up the platform too high. Does that make sense? The platform is from a different boat, so it could just be boat-to-boat differences that are causing an interference and thus raising up the platform too high. The next day I have some time I will pull the boat out, remove the platform from the brackets and do a little experimental fitting. If the platform needs to be moved it is going to be difficult because of the pre-existing holes. If it needs to be moved it may only need to be 1/8" or so, and you can't move holes that small amount in wood. A potential solution would be to drill new holes in the brackets and in the wood (I'll likely be the only one to ever notice - unless a CCF-er comes skiing with me).

That's my boat pictured above and can confirm that the platform is nowhere near touching that middle L bracket. It could not deflect that far even with a load- I have no idea what it's there for. I've omitted the middle bracket entirely on a virgin platform install- it's obviously not needed.

Stop worrying about it and move onto the next project! Carpet looks great, btw. Anyone who has done a carpet job can appreciate the work that goes into making it look good... Not a fun job.
