my 2002 sport naut will start but dies immediately, if I hold the start button it will remain running but release the start button and it dies

no the kill switch is connected. will the motor start and die if the kill switch is not connected or is possibly faulty?

Try removing the lanyard and pressing the kill switch button all the way in and start it. If it stays running, your lanyard needs to be replaced. They wear out over time and don't hold the button all the way in so it makes full contact. If that doesn't work you have other issues.

Same thing happened to me the weekend I bought mine...2000, bought in 2010, which leads to me believe 10+ years may be the shelf life on that part, especially if you bump it carelessly from time to time. Good news is its cheap and easy to replace.
