I have a RH rotation 340 that originally had a Jabsco raw water pump. I found a crack in the housing so a Sherwood G7B took its place. Since it was never installed on this boat and their are no markings for inlet/outlet which way is right? Some say it is bi-directional and orientation doesn't matter. Anyone on this trusted site care to shed some light?

It is bi-directional.
But, direction does in fact matter. You have to orient it for the rotation of your engine. if you position it for a left hand motor, but the motor is a righty, then the pump won't bring water to the motor, it would be trying to take it away. Do you know which way your motor spins? |

There is no in and out on a rubber impeller pump since they will work in ether rotation. Maybe this vid will help you to understand how they work

That was a cool video! I will take a closer look with housing off to try and make more since of it. I hooked water from garden hose to the fake-a-lake and wasn't getting it to prime. I was afraid to rev up and decided to investigate further before i burned up a new impeller. Thanks for the replies. PS- Baitkiller, what the hell is a Dorf?

Dorf? Tim Conway? Now you guys have really lost me.
The Raw Water Pump is bi-directional, only in the sense that it can be made to work on either a RH or LH rotation engine. But, you just have to make sure it's facing the right way for your engine. If it's not taking a prime, even with the positive pressure put on the system by the fake-a-lake, it's a safe bet it needs to be turned around so the can screw is facing the other way. When you've gotten past the initial prime, your really want to test it with the bucket method, so it's sucking on its own. The fake a lake might be pushing water for it, so it's not a great test if everything is working as it should. |

Ok pump was on backwards and the drain plug for the oil cooler never got tightened. Fixed those two things, checked all other connections that would play a factor and it is now priming off the fake-a-lake. Will check with bucket method before heading to the lake. I do love the sound of my RELSYRHC...DORF's are ok too!
