  Hi guys, I have a bit of a steering issue. Last weekend my parents took my boat out and the steering locked up in the left hand position. After tearing into the boat and removing the gas tank, we found that the steering arm that connects to the rudder is too short. When the arm and cable are fully extended out to turn left and then retracted to go straight again, the metal part that is connected to the cable gets stuck on a plastic cap that encapsulates the cable and steering arm. It seems like the steering arm should be longer so that the cable is not exposed and so that the arm does not get caught up. Has anyone ever had an issue like this? I can imagine that the steering cables came out of the factory like this. I'm looking for a way to fix it that does not involve taking the entire steering cable out if possible. I would greatly appreciate any help/info. Thanks in advance! Ben |

Have you ever replaced your cable? I think your due,you will also need that "plastic" cap it is a seal,yours is oblonged out. Your cable looks to be moving farther than the outer jacket. It is a factory crimped assembly and should not do that, pictures are hard to see what is happening. What are you showing in the picture with the arrow?

Ben,
I have an idea that your cable has slipped in it's mounting block bolted to the stringer. This would allow an over travel in one direction. No, your tiller arm as supplied is the correct length. Also, left is port in boating terms!!!  BTW, your dad must must have be out on the lake doing donuts!!

The seal you will need is Teleflex part number SA37868P it keeps water from the bilge from getting into the cable.it does not come with a new cable

When I just changed the cable in the new boat which has a rack, might be different from the rotary style Pete, that back sleeve or even the inner cable will not come that far out of the outer cable. He's got his terms mixed up too Pete he says tiller arm but I think he means that sleeve that mounts to the tiller arm.

I agree, The control arm isn't too short. But the cable IS too broke.
The core probably broke and is held together by the helical wire. The cores are not suppose to come out. If they did it would sure make replacing a whole lot easier. And I'm not seeing a support tube or the clamp block. |

That could be, Gary. I'm thinking if it was set up right, the support tube should be visible in the top pic.
The cable in that boat should be 204 inches. Should be marked on the plastic casing, within a foot of the rear nut. If not look up front. And whatever that is that looks like a copper tube with a glob of electric tape, shouldn't be there. |

Thanks everyone for your input! Looks like I will be replacing the steering cable.
I apologize for the bad pictures. The black cap that is warped is the seal cap. It looks like the previous owner did some homemade engineering work under the dash with some hose clamps to hold the cable in place near the steering gear box as well. The brown wire with tape on it goes to the fuel gauge sender. It will definitely a better connection. Thanks Again |
