I had a very small transmission leak that I was going to fix after we got back from vacation. Well after running hard for two days I have lost about half a quart of fluid. I am trying to make it through the week by checking frequently and topping off in necessary.   My concern is that it is getting worse. It is a direct drive Supra and I think it is the seal between the transmission and engine which is leaking.

So, my concern is the seal totally blowing out and messing something up big. I cannot do the job now at the lake, but there is a marina which may be able to do it.

My preference would be monitor this week and take care of myself when I get back. Is this a realistic option or am I asking for trouble?

Thanks

Tom.
We repeatedly were told by Eric of FFM (when he was still with us) that the forward seal will leak when the pump goes bad. That seal should not see any pressure. You need a rebuild and I do suggest FFM.

Does any one know how to get in touch with FFM transmissions? Did a couple of google searches and could not find anything.

Thanks

I'll play the role of the naysayer...FFM did my trans two years ago and while that was fine, the boat didn't run for two months after I picked it up. I'll never go back there.

Why didn't it run for 2 months? Fill us in on the details.

I agree the seal shouldn't see any pressure but I also say the seal could go bad. That said, the seal in my dad's PCM transmission was bad as well as my BW.

I replaced all seals in my BW probably around 400 ish hours ago. It was going through about a Quart every 50 hours or so. Dad has put 80 hours on his no problem.

It does seem like you are going through and excessive amount of fluid in a short time so the trans probably needs a good looking at.

Seals are cheap and if you are inclined replace it and hope it works. If not get it rebuilt or throw a new pump at it.

when I picked it up after the trans rebuild it ran for a half hour then left me stranded in the middle of the lake. I took it back to them, they said it needed a tune up, new plugs wires call and rotor. Still didn't run. Then he replaced the fuel pump...which one? No idea, I didn't know then what I know now. Still didn't run. Then he told me it was the timing... on a GT-40. That's when I really started to believe he was a quack. A year and a half later at green lake Zack put a timing light on it, it think it was at negative 5. He and Tim and Lewy straightened that out. Then he said it was the fuel pressure regulator. He changed that and it finally ran, but real rough. It didn't run well until Reid replaced the low pressure fuel pump this winter. I live 40 minutes from there and I won't ever go back. Just my .02.

speaking strictly about their transmission rebuilds, i wouldn't go anywhere but FFM. send it in a crate and do the swap yourself. get a new damper plate while you're at it.
