After three years of trouble free boating and several successful trips out this year, we had a sudden onset of trouble. After a few ski runs the boat would not start, it was popping the ignition breaker and not turning over. After ruling out the solenoid an oil check showed dark oil and overfill. Pulled all the plugs, # 6 is wet, engined turned over with plugs removed. I have had some external rust on the manifolds for a few years. Can I assume a manifold leak?

Well, it is most likely the manifold or a head gasket failure. Be careful, trying to start a hydro locked engine can bend the connecting rod or fracture a piston. Turn it over with that plug removed, it may start and that is ok, let it blow out the water and dry it out. A cracked head can put water on the piston also but the fact it won't turn over and is blowing fuses points to hydro lock. Lots of water in the cylinder. Find the cause quick.

Agreed on the probability of manifold leak. The rust stream on the manifold is a sure sign of impending doom. It's fairly easy to remove and test it as long as the bolts aren't so corroded that they snap off.
That's definitely where I would start though. |

Agreed on the manifold being the likely culprit, but I would start with a compression check. Buy, borrow, steal a compression gauge and give her a good test with no water in the manifolds. If healthy then sleep well and know you just need to fix your exhaust issues.
