I have finally got the rebuilt engine and velvet drive back in my 83 SN and engine is purring like a bigcat. After we broke in the engine and double checked the tranny fluid I tried to put it in gear and the shaft did not start spinning. It would spin a little bit in neutral and a little bit in drive, but I could stop it by holding the shaft. Logic would tell me that its not actually going into gear. Any thoughts? Tranny oil is type F and water and fluid are flowing in opposing directions.

Here is a photo of the rebuild to date. Carpet gets replaced after I figure out the tranny!

Is the trans pump set correctly to the engine rotation?

As far as I know it is. The guy that rebuilt it asked before he sent it to me and I told him that the engine turns clockwise in forward. Would or could that cause the issue though if I told him incorrectly?

Gary, is the correct way to determine the rotation looking at the tranny, engine then helm from the stern or standing with my back to the bow looking at the pulleys and the stern?

Disconnect the shift cable linkage from the tranny and manually shift it into gear and see if that engages it.
If not, I would take it back to the guy that rebuilt it cause something is definitely wrong then. By the way, the fluid should be Dexron and not type F. |

We were manually trying to put it in gear during start up as the cable is not even hooked up yet. unfortunately I cant get in touch with the guy who rebuilt it so I may be on my own here.
The question remains is that if the tranny pump is not at the correct rotation, could that be the source of the problem? |

When you pull the tyranny to check the pump orientation clean and paint that nasty coupler.
Looks good |

Not that I'm aware of. Wrong pump orientation would make it spin backwards but it would still engage. This isn't engaging to start spinning. Maybe the pump is oriented so that it's kinda in-between the two potential directions? IDK if that's even possible. Just trying to think of any possibilities. |

Wrong pump direction would absolutely have the effects that your are seeing. Pull the gear off and look at it. The pump cover has small arrows cast into it. THESE ARROWS SHOULD MIMIC THE DIRECTION THE ENGINE ROTATES. So to be clear, if you have R/H engine the top arrow should be pointing to stbd if not, take out the screws, rotate the pump 180* and bolt it back up.
You should be done before lunch. |

Eddie--- Baitkiller is definitely right on this one. The transmission will always spin the same direction as the engine in forward, and always spin opposite of the engine in reverse - IF the pump is in the right position. If the pump is not in the right position then it does not build up any pressure to push the pistons that compress the clutch packs and little to nothing happens. If there is enough fluid and the trans rebuild is ok then the pump location is the problem. - and it can take a few seconds to move air out and fluid in the first time and the level can drop relatively quickly - so check that but likely you will need to do exactly as Baitkiller describes. |

Then I stand corrected.
I just know that when I had my tranny rebuilt the pump was backwards but I did have propulsion in both directions. It was just backward. |

Gun Driver, I know the coupler looks like a dog dragging its Rear end!
Thanks for the assist everyone, I'm pulling her back apart this weekend. Last question on the tranny fluid, the Borg Warner manual says Dexron Type F. Has anyone had better success with a different type? |

I don't know that Type F would hurt but every BW I've seen recommended Dexron. Don't use synthetic or the extended mileage stuff. That won't bode well for these trannys. Just plain old Dexron. I think most of the modern fluids are Dexron and Type F compatible but I'm old school and personally try and find Dexron specific.
The early PCM 1:23 trannys recommended straight 20W. Now those are all highly recommended to switch over to Dexron too. |
