Thanks jbear and backfoot100 (John and Eddie) for a great day on the water in Winter Haven, FL! My Dad loved your boat Eddie, and loved talking to you John. My sister always enjoys meeting Harley fans and had a blast getting back out on the ski's. Syd really appreciated all the tips on front deeps, she really thinks she has some good ideas, just needs some more sets on a regular basis to build her endurance. We all saw I had similar issues with the endurance thing. Just so everyone knows, I broke the boom, so if your coming to ski with these guys, its my fault - I am SO SO sorry Eddie   

I would be happy to give Seipel a call and see if we can get something shipped out to you once I get back to Milwaukee area...

Lastly, I don't think we have many videos of Eddie, so I caught this one, its a real nice baccerds run!

Managed to get out this morning. Certainly some improvemet with the boom out the drivers side. Kristin is becoming more comfortable with the differences in driving forwards vs. baccerds. Got some video in but gave up on trying to edit so posted one of the vid's to youtube. Things were pretty comfortable whent the speed got dialed in (other than my arms being spent....) As noted by others earlier in this thread that comfort / planing zone is right at 11 mph. Hopefully the water will be nice tomorrow afternoon and can try to get back on the water.
Perhaps the impatience in me but I am thinking that I am using up alot of energy in the earlier runs practicing foot to water and switching back ot the other foot.

Danm, I just saw this.
Geez Steve it was just one of the cables!!! Not like it was the boom itself. Just so everyone knows, the only thing that broke was the loop of one of the cables where it attaches to the carabiner that snaps to the bow eye.
The loop on that cable was obviously frayed and corroded after looking at it. I know that it was not adjusted properly and that cable was just a touch shorter than the other one. It had been like that ever since I got it with the boat and never touched it because I could never slide the plastic protective tube over the turnbuckles to adjust it the way it's supposed to be. Those loops never had a thimble on them either which would have prevented the fraying.

I'll be able to fix that without any problem at all. I had to completely redo John's boom cables when we added his boom extension. One of his turnbuckles was bent and couldn't be adjusted. I cut both of them off and reinstalled two new stainless turnbuckles.
I have access to a ferrule swaging tool from work so this fix will be easy. You don't need to get anything at all so stop thinking like that.

It was great meeting you and your family. So glad we got to get together and you were able to get on the water. Definitely need to do it again when you get down this way again.

When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

The plant speed is good, much better than last time. You're not ready for that rate of acceleration but nice effort.

Couple of things, have your videographer rotate the phone 90 degrees, it will allow us to see more of what is happening, that ends my area of expertise.

On the footing part (and I have no business giving any advice here) I didn't really see any bending at the waist. As you turn your toes down, you should be bending at the waist too.

no advice here, but those are the first videos I've seen where you put both feet in, so in my book that's progress, nice work. doesn't look like your boat though, and those hands looked a little many to be your daughter. got you some driving help, did you?

Greg, like the others said, much progress. First, I would raise the boom 2 feet minimum, maybe 3 feet. You are doing it old school, which is not easy school. High boom, more upward pull. Second, you and your driver need a better relationship (LOL). You are planted (good), feet spread (good), sliding on the water (good). Your driver is trying to accelerate you onto your feet (not good). You are not progressing from the plant. You need to get bent in the middle, and as a reward your driver gives you speed. More bend, more speed. That is the "relationship" I spoke of. How do you get bent? Great question. Different words resonate with different people. Andy says, "fold like lawn furniture" Willie says "press down with your chest and chin." I was in a similar spot like you and these things did not click. Don Mixon Jr. said to "pooch your butt up in the air and replicate a 'pull-out' move like you are having sex." Now that worked like a charm for me. As I pooch my butt up, I turn down my feet incrmentally to get more "bite" on the water. More bite, more pooch, more bend. More bend, more speed. At first it feels like a long time in this progression, but face down on the water, it all seems long.

You are almost there my friend!

Thanks Roy. Drivers comment and analogy was pretend to be a stripper working for tips and not be afraid to get the arse in the air. Plenty to think about as this is all happening (and I have never been confused with a quick thinker- lol). While it does not look it in the video's I could actually feel the "boys" lifting off the water and feeling as though the rest of the body was off the water as well. Got to admit I was pretty pleased with last nights progress and home it continues.

Looks like good progress Greg. Im learning a lot watching you go through the process. One of my goals this summer is to learn how to ski backwards. Hopefully the lake will cooperate and I will have some flat water to work with.

I barefooted both Saturday and Sunday and am amazed at how the BFN beats down rollers and chop. This was what the lake looked like Sunday. Pretty typical if we don't get out early enough.

Thanks Dave. I am anxious to get home this week and get back out there and continue the process (and hopefully the progress). If nothing else I am getting used to coming up out of the water baccerds.
I need to get you connected with my brother when he is home again as he one of those who like to get in some early morning sets. He is on Little Sebago off RT 85. He has a 2003 SN 196.

And by the way I can almost see myself in the shine on that boat of yours!

Hey guys, been reading through some of these pages for a while now and have watch a number of videos.
I figured it was time for me to use my boat for what it was made for and try out the boom for myself.

I learnt a few things about trying to barefoot immediately, but among many the number one thing was.
DO NOT have your girlfriend, sisters, and mother on board when attempting to learn this.
I was not allowed to continue after 3 attempts. ( i was pretty tired after the 3rd anyways)
they were afraid for me haha. as you can hear in the background of my video.

Now that i have joined the ranks of trying this out i figured i could share a video of my attempt.
I have no idea what speed i was at because speedos don't all read and person driving was new.
it seemed like it was ok. definitely a little rough out that day.
i guess the questions i have is how does boom height seem to you guys?
do you think faster?
I weigh in at 215. I told him around 3000 rpm maybe faster but i'm unsure of where that puts me in my 88BFN.

glad to see you joining the ranks of the amature footers tony, keep after it, its addicting.

a couple tips-
1. get a barefoot suit. not a wetsuit, a barefoot suit. you can sometimes find them used here on the site, or ebay or ski it again if you don't want to buy new cause they are pricey.
2. get a barefoot suit. barefoot international, eagle, kso, to name a few.
3. get a pair of barefoot shorts to go under the suit.

I personally have a barefoot international iron suit and matching shorts. Some people say that suit is too stiff for them, but they're good barefooters. The stiffness helps make up for the fact that I spend a lot of time gliding on my ass or falling down, but its all a matter of preference. There was a thread titled something about a eagle barefoot suit a few months ago that went into the matter in detail, search for it and you'll learn a lot.

Is there anyone you know near you who knows how to barefoot or has experience driving the boat and pulling skiers? You can learn with no suit and your girlfriend running the boat WFO (and a lot of people did), but it is definitely not the easy or comfortable way.   When you're beginning any watersport, your success is 90% driver/instructor, 10% water conditions, and 10% skier.

If you don't have an experienced teacher/driver, see if somebody on here lives close enough to give you a pull, or try to attend a clinic put on by a pro. The cost of admission will be well worth the immediate payoff.

If you are forced to go it alone, tell the driver to aim for 34-36 on the boom (maybe get a gps if your speedos are wonky?), you looked like you were flying. you had a somewhat unusual problem, it seems like you read the advice on here where people said get your feet under your butt...well, yours were a little too far under, that's why the went out behind you. although you do want them as close to your butt as possible, they do have to be in front of your body for you to stand up, that's just physics.

Good luck, and always take the camera on the boat, its proved to be my most effective training tool.

I did order a suit. It hasnt come in yet and i had an old 6 mil dive suit that i barely fit in and it is the same vintage as my boat so i figured it was appropriate.
I agree about learning with experianced people on boatd and driving. I am the first of anyone of my friends to even try barefoot. Everyone always talked about it but never tried it.

Thats not a bad idea about hooking up with some folks who have experience. I donate fuel, my boat, and an afternoon of fun for some tips on BFing?
The camera has always proben to be a good tool of learning. Thanks for the tips ill keep you guys updated on my progress.

Tony - there are a couple of folks on this thread that live our your way. At a minimum, head to the CT mini reunion in August and meet a bunch of these guys.

Tough to tell with the video you posted, but in my opinion - WAY too fast. Even at 215 lbs you will be able to stand on your feet with good technique on the boom at 28 to 30 mph, definitely should not be going more then the 34 -36 mph as suggested above. More speed will make the water "harder" but it also will magnify any little mistake you make and the wipeouts will be way more brutal...

my lake time has been minimal this year due to kids, work, etc. I was able to get some time this weekend working on back deeps. My driver is new to watersports and had only watched a back deep on youtube prior to these attempts but he was all I had.

The video is grainy and not shot from the best perspective but if there's anything that can be critiqued, I'd welcome the comments.
