Steve,
Just my opinion, and there are better coaches out there, but I would say 1 - at first, spread a little wider, and get your ankles on the water vs your toes (you will pull your feet in to shoulder width as you stand up) And 2 - if you are just working on your plant and glide, thats fine, but if you are wanting to stand up, your driver needs to be accelerating more/faster. I tell my drivers as soon as my feet are planing smoothly accelerate relatively quickly and smoothly to footing speed. The biggest aid I got in getting my starts consistent and I always repeat it: Some coaches say press with your chest. That resulted in inconsistent results for me. Best advice I got was legs pull in, feet rotate down, legs push down into water all in one smooth motion. (my point here is I am emphasizing legs push down with waist bend vs chest push down with waist bend) |

Made a little more progress with my cousin this weekend. Took a run on the boom to knock the dust off, and he finally figured out the whole feet under the butt thing. They were a little close together, but no need to split hairs.
Moved to the short line, it was slow going. Watching someone try it for the first time reminded me just how many things there are to keep track of. I told him I didn't want him putting his feet in, just work on getting to the butt glide, so every time he tried to stand up he was nowhere near speed. Some runs were better than others but for the most part he got progressively closer and closer. Then we started to lose the water. Flat back, wide knees... Got the back straighter up, just banged his feet off the water Things are starting to come together, if he hadn't gotten sideways (or knew where to go from there) this one was looking promising I'm getting better at my long line deeps, this was actually my first attempt behind my own boat. Take 2 is probably the best one I've ever done, and the only reason I let go is cause my dad signaled to me that there was trouble ahead, worse than what I had already come through. In retrospect I wish I had held on to try to ride it out, but at least I didn't get hurt. As you can see, still none of it is automatic. Also, the camera mount wasn't quite sighted in...should have been a little lower and to the left, oh well. |

Those were hot starts but you seemed to handle it well. Decent plant and plane. As Larry mentioned, gas pedaling to some degree/toes in, which was your demise both times. Stick a foot/heel and around you go. More ankles down toes out. Bend, you're not bending. All you older/larger guys have this problem. Perhaps you need to really warm up and stretch out before a set. Ski forwards first and loosen up? No shorts, that's also stiffening you up. The Iron/Iron[/cup] combo is quite limiting. Break at the waist (unlike every other discipline), fold like a lawn chair, pull out of your girlfriend, whatever it takes. Hinge at the hips and you probably would have come up of the water. With those trainers on you probably would have rose up on the second pass. |

Thanks for the tips fellas. The gas pedaling things makes sense as does the bend, pull out, waist break, etc.
Hoping to nail down some time for additional attempts this Friday and will implement suggestions then. thanks again |

Adam,
Curious, are you intentionally cheeking outside of the wake? If so, your control is much better than mine. I'm very inconsistent with my ability to get outside of the wake on my butt. Looked like ya'll were having a good time. |

Funny story...because I had never been long line behind my boat the first thing I did was get out on a drop ski and put my foot in the water in a few different spots to see what I liked. I attempted to cut through the prop wash with one foot in the water and one in the ski, and as soon as my foot hit it it took me down. So yeah, outside the wake on my boat is the place to be. Its funny though, the outside wake wasn't hard for me to get over at that speed, but the inside (or secondary, or whatever its called) was brutal. You can see me struggling to get over it, but once I do, I just slide over the outside one. I need to put some thought into Greg F's hip suggestion...can't get my head around that. |

Cheeking is really unnecessary by yourself. Get up and go where you want. It's only helpful for multiples. I can't cheek worth a damn. I have rolled over the wake several times and those handle dings on the top of your feet do hurt. GlassSeeker had a bunch of good tips somewhere in this thread.
Shorts, a shorter line, upward pull, smaller wake, flatter table, good form all certainly help, and if that's still not enough just do the crazy Deeno hand wave and get whipped out LOL. |

I'm from the same school (and a marginal cheeker) but for less-than-veteran footers, it really is nice to be able to plant in the curl where it's nice and smooth. Some boats have disastrous tables that can be tough to navigate if you're not a strong footer yet. I hate giving whips to people who ask for them, but it's sometimes necessary. |

i suppose some would say that footing through the undesirable water will make you a better footer anyway.

Oh sure... If they don't fall when planting and can manage to get themselves out of the trench that some boats have! . I try to get people to a proficient level of ability before suggesting (or demanding) they plant in the table behind a rough footing boat. If they're still 50/50 on planting in the curl, they're *almost* to that point, ha.

Cowboy up you curl riders! According to skutsch you're not a longline barefooter until you do a complete wake crossing anyway.

It took some searching, but I think I found the discussion HW was talking about, re: cheeking.

The trough behind my '96 Sport was freaking terrible even back 100'. The 206 is not that bad, certainly would not shy away from planting directly behind the boat.
Adam, don't overthink planting the hip as you are coming out of the water - give it a shot. Your plants are looking good. I see the beginnings of a big ole barefoot line in the making at Reid's in September. |

Thanks Greg...I'm trying to put in the time to get them there. The last three weekends having my dad to pull me has been awesome, knowing I can count on my driver is something I don't get every day. I'll start playing around with the hip thing, but I also really like Andy's suggestion of loosening one hand on the handle, that seems simple enough to actually work.
Sign me up for the big ole barefoot line...how many of us do you think the shrimptique can pull? That thing would probably have a bitching table if we could get it up to speed |

Yep, that is what the old school guys that I ski with say, gotta cross both wakes before you can say you're a barefooter. As I said earlier, just get to the left or right of the prop wash and stand up, if you start a little off center from the boat, your momentum will carry you to that point anyway - effortless! |

Made it back out for some more baccerds attempts. Managed to fill the go-pro card and will mess with that later. All the advice / pointers are starting to sink in when you think about them and take the time to string them together . So ....I finally get up and WTH I end up letting go.....Now I can't wait to get back out this weekend.

Congratulations, Greg! You can definitely hear the excitement from your crew. This is great news.
I made it back out this morning with a good driver and instruction and made some progress. Close, but no cigar yet for me. |

Greg what I was trying to imply was if you click on quote next to the reply option on the post it reveals the forum post format codes.
For youtube it requires the tube inside the [] I often just cut and paste the correct format codes and type in the correct youtube filename in this case the filename is "gu88nwl5mdE" Hope I have not confused you further, have a play around with the quote noting the format codes in the square brackets. |

Like lewy said, all you need to do is quote someone who did it right (picture, link or YouTube) and mimic what they did with your own information.

Great morning session. Larry Hineline came over and we pulled away fro the dock around 7:15 this morning. I am uploading a couple of videos now and will post later today.
So good videos of Larry and one of my friend Bryan Reese with a quality head packer. If you wondering about videos for me.....well lets just say we took a couple of selfies with the GoPro (thought it was in video mode). A couple of good runs though. Stay tuned |
